The folks at Jalopnik helped out Kotaku writer Yannick LeJacq overcome his fear of driving, after a (fairly serious) accident. Since a friend of mine got involved in an accident himself over the past month, (and yes, he’s fine) I’m sharing this to show that it is possible to overcome your fears, after a trauma.

About a year after I started driving, I took a “Highway Safety & Accident Avoidance” course through a company called BSI at Summit Point Raceway in Summit Point, WV. It was really a great class and the things I learned there have saved my life, or at least prevented an accident, on several occasions.
They have a fleet of old Caprice police cars (maybe something different now, this was about 12 years ago) and they had a toggle switch on the dash that could disable ABS. The format was sit in a class for about 20 mintues to discuss the physics of driving (no math involved, just general theory) and talk about a particular driving technique or maneuver. Then get in the cars and go practice. There were 3 students and 1 instructor in each car. The instructor performed the maneuver first, then we all took turns doing it a few times. This way we got to experience it and listen to the instructors critique of each of us. At the end of the day they made a test course that combined all the different skills we’d learned.
I bring this up because about half of the class were younger drivers who had been in serious accidents before. It was a great way to learn and practice in a safe and controlled manner, and by the end of the day I think most all of them really got their confidence back.

Congrats to this guy for overcoming his fear. I still feel as though this is a risk that compact car owners seem to gloss over when they buy them. I’m always prepared for a potential crash when I drive and I’m pretty sure if I survive I’ll just get back into the seat and do it again. I just feel if he were in the Escape and not the civic, he would probably not have been affected as much.
Different people experience trauma different ways.
