I kind of want a Trabant or some other soviet car, then I'll drop something painfully modern/smooth/quiet in there and drive that thing like crazy. I mean, if you're going to resto-mod something, you might as well go all out.

Get a Lada instead. A Niva, a 2101 or 2105. Or a wagon version of one of the latter two. They’re larger with a larger engine bay, chunkier and 4WD/RWD.

The Nivas are so cool, but any of these would be great... Don’t they still make the Niva in all their 1980s interior/exterior glory.

Damn you, import laws.

The Italian specialist mechanic that does the trickier jobs on our 156s was saying that he once swapped a built Fiat 2.0l Twincam into a Niva for a guy to go rallycrossing in. Must have been a bit of a rocket :)

That was a surprisingly good read. It’s pretty much the exact type of adventure I live for. I would do the same thing if given the chance and drive something like this to alaska or something.

I stopped reading Edmunds a few years ago, but I might have to go back to keep up with this....
