So I work at a summer camp and am over seeing a Lego robotics class, today the kids wanted to build race cars and one kid wanted to out build everyone here. After about two hours of building and some programming, he presented this master piece.

He paired it with his motorcycle

Sometimes I don’t mind kids or my job

I wish I had the money to buy a mindstorms set, but what happened to the smaller motors thy used to have? I remember back in the day they were just basic electric motors with a case on them for mounting, now they have these big ones that seem too bulky for compact builds.

Oh the three motor drag car. I tried one with a 2 speed transmission... and that didn’t work (too weak). I see they used the new 8 tooth gears as well. I should probably get some of those. I don’t do NXT much anymore. I’ve sorta given up and now moved on to crawlers and trail trucks.

They are pretty bulky, but they do include rotation sensors! That’s a perk.

That is and advantage. It also seems the controller has more ports than the old model. I wish they still offered the old motors with separate sensor just to be able to build sleeker bots. Looking at their newest model though it looks like they offer a smaller motor but not as small as the original

Nice. The old set I’ve got has separate rotation sensors. I actually competed in the FIRST (acronym not the 1st) Lego Mindstorms league in middle school. It was a blast.

New mindstorms are awesome. When I was a kid I had the yellow brick 2.0. In high school robotics we had those, and you can even program them in (robot)C!

Ooooh man. That brings me back. I did the Arctic one in 6th grade, then Mars in 8th grade (2001 and 2003, respectively). Then we had to use it last year in my intro to engineering class. Somehow the programming....program...got waaaywaaay worse and not as intuitive :/

Yeah I did the Arctic one too! I don’t remember what level it was at, district or state or whatever, but we came in first place. It was in Tampa, so I think it was state level, but I kinda remember there being a team from Alaska. I don’t remember if we did the Mars one or not.

Not so good for torque.

It was the only way to make it go fast, without the gears it was rather disappointing
