CALLING ALL OPPONAUTS!! I have a friend who is in dire need of a second opinion on a second car. And you automotively apt bastards are just the people to pull this off. So let’s get started, shall we?
A good friend of mine (we’ll call him “Al”) currently has a 2013 Nissan GT-R with about 700 hp at the wheels on E85. He wants more speed, but it would cost him about $25-35k to accomplish this. Al also has to take into account that he’ll lose pretty much every dime he’ll put into it PLUS additional depreciation by putting on about 10k worth of miles over the next two years. Thus, he is considering a second option.
2012 McLaren MP4-12Cs are running anywhere between $149-159k with 10k-18k on the odometer. Annual services aren’t expensive (I think he said about $1,500). Al figures that he could buy one of these examples, put 10k miles on it, and sell it after “two years MAX” while only taking a depreciation hit of $20-25k.
That’s where you come in. Are there any similar (HARDTOP COUPE) vehicles that you know of that would be similar in price, age, costs, and performance (0-60: 2.9, 1/4: 10.8)? Give Al options.
Let’s roll.

Fuck everything you just said and get an F-Type.
It may not be as fast as the 12C, and it might have depreciation and reliability issues in the future, but it’s quite possibly the best looking, best sounding, and all around most fantastic car I can think of for it’s price, or any price really, for that matter. And now available with either the previously available ZF 8-Speed, which is an excellent transmission, or a new 6-Speed manual. (On the V6 only though, which is the one you want anyways)

997 911 Turbo?

I like your style, but it needs to be a street legal hard top.

I might be biased, but, uh, I'd stick with the McLaren. If he wants it to be less obviously old there's ways of making it look like a 650S and outperform it.

It’s street legal, just no hard top. But it’s the only way to go faster while being half price. Or he could just get a Z06

Nah. He takes his car to the drag strip. He needs power and speed.
I agree that it looks good (and sounds better), but I don't think Al will bite.

They are street legal and you can buy hard tops :P

Jaguar F-Type R, Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Then a Hellcat?

I was looking at Tavarish’s post on that earlier today. Maybe the $5k tune, but looking like the 650S isn't a biggie.

Mmmaybe. I'll definitely bring that up with him.

The Jags are too new (not enough depreciation yet), but the Vantage V-12 might be an option.

True, but resale value?
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:20 |
|
Probably too new. He wants something that depreciation has already hit on.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:20 |
|
Probably not too bad actually
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:21 |

The F-Type R is a little over $100k new

How about 991 Turbo S? 0-60 in 2.6 and wonderful driving characteristics. It’s also one of the best Grand Tourers available.

I was looking at similarly-priced Murcielagos today. The maintenance might be a bit too steep, but it definitely fits the bill otherwise.
The Gallardo might be better suited for his style.

As I’m sure he knows from the GT-R, AWD makes for good launches.

If the dude wants a McLaren he will regret buying anything else - get the McLaren.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:24 |

I mean the specs you listed are pretty high but there is always R8 V10GT and such and maybe GT500 SuperSnakes, I say the GT500 cause they make 800HP, cheap to work on, and still batshit fast
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:24 |

I think your only step up, speed wise, from a 700 WHP GT-R will be a Veyron SS or a Venom.
Is your friend in the Triple Comma Club, or just a tire kicker?
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:25 |

We went over his preference on ride styles. He’s not big into the tourer thing, but the speed on the 0-60 puts it well into his preferred category of cars. I'll have to look at the 1/4 traps.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:28 |

I think it’s a low eleven or high 10 at the quarter mile, but think about it- you could drive it at one track, then continue driving right on to the next track. Also, the launch control is fucking invincible. 50+ hard launches in a row, one after the other, and that’s when Road and Track gave up.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:32 |
|
His car is an absolute beast when it comes to launches. I've driven it at 75% (not my car, didn't want to wreck) and it was insane.

F-Type V8 SVR, which is going to have 600hp and AWD? It’s going to be a thing he’ll have to wait for though, since it’s *allegedly* coming early next year.

McLaren is dopeness, but for a different thought:
+ a visit to UGR
.
.
.
.
because who doesnt want this?
Also UGR Gallardos are a thing but I didn’t look to see how expensive those are.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:43 |

Not in the triple comma club, but he's not a tire kicker either.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 22:52 |

Used Gallardo or R8 with an Underground Racing TT kit! 140k for everything.
![]() 07/01/2015 at 23:02 |

Drag racing those kinds of cars is just retarded.

Get the McLaren.

this car

I support this more than getting a UGR Gallardo or R8 — those cars are ridiculously costly if something breaks because UGR sure as hell won’t be cheap. With a V8, any performance shop specializing in domestic cars won’t be as costly.

A modified 996 turbo would be more epic. Although unlike me, many don’t like the 996.
