I fell out of my chair. Three legends, to be sure. This track is spectacular.

(Also, I am obliged to remind everyone that “Funky President” was written about Gerald Ford, one of the most deeply un-funky men ever to have lived, who presided over very un-funky times.)

President Ford got the short end of history. He was branded a klutz when he was actually supremely athletic. Ford was a man of keen integrity. Thank you, Dr. JV, for mentioning him.

Oh, I concur that the portrayal of President Ford often didn’t match the reality. He was always parodied as a slow speaker when in reality it was a conscious decision (if my often-foggy memory serves) to speak more slowly and deliberately in front of the camera. I think his athletic record speaks for itself. Given the multiple resignations of the Nixon administration, he was dropped into it, to be sure.

But, I stand by my original claim. The man was not funky. Many things, but not funky.

I’m extremely happy to oblige.

That’s the talent of Amerigo gazaway. All his mixes are free on his site.

You really should download them. Both Yasiin Gaye volumes (mos def + Marvin Gaye), Fela Soul (Fela Kuti + de la soul) and this track is from The Big Payback Vol 3

This track isn’t even my favorite on The Big Payback. Mine is “Good Rockin Robbin”

I concur: nothing funky about the guy at all. Stand-up guy, all-American. I think that Mitt Romney gets some similar undeserved criticism. (Note: this is not a political endorsement, but an observation.)

Everything that Amerigo does has been amazing. I spent a long time listening to nothing but Yasiin Gaye.

Inner City Traveling Man (both versions) is especially good on Yasiin Gaye.

I also liked the treatment that “What’s Beef” (I love the lyrics) got in “B stands for Beef” as well as Undeniable and Ghetto Rock

Funky, but I think I’d rather listen to the original songs on their own merits.

I don’t blame you, but this stuff is very well put together

It is, and I understand how a conflation of other things may help create something new, but I have always had a fundamental issue with sampling. I would rather the people write something their own music rather than ride the coattails of other artists.

I can understand that with some lazy sampling, but Amerigo Gazaway takes sampling to a whole other level
