This is my plan for a hybrid go kart. The frame will be tubular steel and a roll cage that I’ll weld.

That is kinda a crazy idea.

But would it be awesome?

It would. It looks like you’re trying to have the front wheels electric and the back gas. Would there be any way for the gas to charge the electric?

Electric motors, but no batteries?

I had an idea for a crazy kart once...
Split rear axle, each one driven from a worm gear from an individual electric motor. Front wheels are casters. Steering is done with differential throttle, braking comes from the natural resistance of a worm drive refusing to go backwards.
Alternately, front wheels are a conventional layout, all else is the same. Then yo can have a drift kart when you want, and theoretically, a manual torque vectoring setup for good handling when you want.

They would go under the seat(s)

In theory, I could add a gas generator, but I don’t see the need right now. I’m starting this on a $400 budget, so for now, it’s just the gas and I’ll retrofit the electric later if I need it.

That would be cool as well.

So just charge on the wall and then regenerative braking?
![]() 06/25/2015 at 11:24 |

No regenerative braking wither. Very simple. Just ~400 AH battery to power the 2 motors, giving a roughly 100 mile - 4 hour range.
And I’ll be adding a clutch to each, so if they run out of power I can just disconnect them and run on gas alone.

That should work. Have fun.

I will. :)
Due to cost ($400 to start) we’re just doing the gas RWD setup, and we’ll add the electric parts (or more gas engines) to the front if we need to.

A double engine go-kart would be cool. Sorta like that Jeep prototype but probably less safe.

Absolutely less safe, a roll cage is planned, we’re going to hoon this thing, and we will roll it.
Any ideas for steering or suspension? That’s where we’re having issues.

Roll cage is good. I rolled a Polaris RZR once. Pushed it back over and it still ran great. Not even a scratch. Steering and suspension... I got nothing. Maybe try yard sales (or craigslist) and see if you can pick up a cheap, used go kart or golf cart to hack up and use.

I think I’ve found something on ebay. Looks like $400 might not do it though...

Ebay might be a bit pricy (usually is). Go to yard sales and swap meets. I don’t really know what else.
