I did it, I’ve come to the dark side...I bought a motorcycle! I am the proud owner of a 2010 Buell Blast! It was used as a trainer in Harley-Davidson’s Rider’s Edge program for most of its life so it had only 700 miles on it and I got it for $1000. It has a few minor issues, but it’s still pretty clean and it runs good.
It started innocently enough. My roommate, who has been riding for a few years now, has been trying to talk me into getting my motorcycle endorsement and ultimately a bike. He even went as far as to replace the pile of Rolling Stone, Road & Track, and Grassroots Motorsports magazines in the bathroom with all motorcycle magazines. I’ve entertained the idea for a while, but always thought I would get myself killed. I thought, hell, it can’t be any more fun to tear up some winding roads on a bike as it is in my MR2. I’ve never been so happy to be wrong...
Anywho, long story short I took the MSF class and was hooked. I had a blast (pun intended) just dodging some cones on the little Suzuki TU250x provided in the class so I knew I just had to get a bike ASAP. Sure enough, after a few weeks of searching craigslist, I found the little thumper and bought it last saturday. As of yesterday I got a tag and insurance and a good jacket, helmet, and gloves.
I plan on going on some rides soon so hopefully I remember to take a lot of pictures. I’ve read all the pieces around here about beginner bikes and gear, but maybe I’ll make some posts from a beginner’s perspective of the process of getting the endorsement, gear, bike, and learning to ride if there’s interest.

Awesome! Glad to see another Oppo coming to the dark side. Just remember, be safe and keep it shiny side up.

Congrats! Owning my first motorcycle ruined car acceleration for me forever. :(

Definitely interested as I’m still looking for my first bike. Good luck and keep the rubber side down !

I took the Riders edge program that Harley puts on and rode a blast. They seemed like pretty good starter bikes, the only thing I didn’t like is that ,since it is a single cylinder 500cc, it makes the motor vibrate like a mother fucker. I also wanted alittle more power, but shit for $1000 and only 700 miles you cant complain about it to much.

Hahaha, yep, me too.

yeah it certainly vibrates a lot haha. I think its got just about the right amount of power for me...for now. It can get out of its own way and can cruise on the highway a little better than the 250’s.

Congrats! And good call on the jacket, helmet and especially gloves... But as someone who’s nursing a chewed-up ankle from a little lay-down the other night, get some pants/boots too!!

a good first bike, from what I hear. and so few miles! i’m assuming the issues it is are related to it not being ridden much, clogged carbs and bad gas etc?

Great find, great bike for the price to get started on! Keep the air-cooling in mind if you’re sitting in traffic. My ninja 500 was a great starter bike, and I still miss it every time I get trapped on my VFR in traffic. It’s a V4 puts two pistons/heads/exhaust right between my legs... talk about uncomfortable.

pretty much. It runs a little rough when the engine is cold, but once it’s warmed up it runs great especially now that I’ve burned most of the old gas off.

Ouch, yeah some good boots are next on the list. I should probably look into the pants too. I don’t think my Levi’s would hold up to well in an off.

My bike has a better power/weight ratio than a Veyron (Without my fat ass, however)
It’s the rare car that actually feels fast anymore.

Boots can make riding much more pleasant, as well. They help support your ankle, give you a firmer sole, and usually have a hardened pad for shifting. I had to ride in street shoes for a month or so, and my big toe was real sore from working the shifter.

Ride safe!
I have a V-twin also in my faithful steed!

Yeah man... denim or whatever will literally vaporize (about as quickly as your flesh) when it hits the pavement....

I’ve ridden in the rain a few times, its not really hard, just miserable. Getting soaked isn’t fun.
