When I got my Mustang running, I used these old and abused KYB Gas-A-Just struts that I had lying around combined with a craptastic coil-over kit. I had planned on replacing them eventually, but I ran across a deal on a set of bilsteins with very low miles from a friend I trusted. Ordered a Maximum Motorsports coil-over kit, and now the old and busted is replaced with the new hotness:
DAT BILSTEIN.
Now BACK TO THE TRACK!

Looks nice! If I’m not mistaken, I think I’ve seen this car at Detroit Metro area autocross events. What track do you run at? Maybe I’ll see you out there!

Yep, you are correct, and I’ll be at the Silverdome event next weekend. I haven’t taken the car to any open track events, but I’m thinking about going to Gingerman in two weeks with it. Just hope my brakes are up to it!

Just found out I have to do some cooling system work on the Montego, but I still think it would be funny as hell to run my Montego in autoX. Stock suspension, stock skinny tires.

Ohhh. Tracking a fox body. That sounds like fun. Are they really as bad as people say they are in corners? I’ve only heard bad things about foxes and corners.

If you don’t do that I will find you and I will force you to listen to Katy Perry.

Stock they are pretty bad, particularly if you add any power. Mine is heavily modified, so it’s not that bad. I beat an E92 M3 at my local AutoX, and I’m not even a good driver!

Cool! I might see you at Gingerman. OTDs at Waterford Hills Raceway are good shakedown runs if you are concerned about your car on track. Not much heavy braking, and lots of good cornering variety. Just use a good fluid and proper pads and you should be fine!

lol
I gotta get this cooling situation under control before we can talk about that haha.
Ordering a new radiator today probably, I’ve done water pump, thermostat, new hoses, it’s killing me. I know it’s flowing through the block OK because all 4 hoses are hot (heater and in/out of radiator). I’m so sick of overheating issues on this car. It’s been like this since I took it to Woodward the first year I had it...which was 4 years ago.

I’ve got Motul RBF600 in it and Hawk HP+ pads, so I’m trying to cover my bases. It’s light too, but I’m still a bit worried!
I’ll check out Waterford, thanks for the tip!

You’ll be fine! I’ve run that combo in much heavier cars and been alright. On your first track day, you shouldn’t be going hard enough to overheat the brakes in a 20 min session especially if you’re learning the course.
Here’s another question: Who did your cage? Weld in or bolt in? Looks pretty nice.
![]() 06/15/2015 at 09:49 |

I used to wrench on cars for a living, if you need any help let me know! I design engines for a living so I’ve picked up a few things along the way.
Even if you don’t get it fixed, come out anyway! I’ve met a few people at the detroit autocross events and everyone is really cool. You could hitch some passenger rides for sure!
![]() 06/15/2015 at 09:53 |

I’ll keep it in mind, I’ve actually never been to an autoX event. And I always welcome friends in the garage while wrenches are turning, where around Detroit are you again?
Free to attend I assume?
It’s 45 minutes to an hour away. Do you know of one closer to Canton/275 corridor at some point this summer? It might be cool to bring my son to it, I think he’d love watching (he’s 2.5). he had fun climbing all over the Montego this weekend.

Weld in.
I welded it in, it’s a Wolfe Racecraft kit. They make the best Mustang cage kits bar none. There isn’t any point in making your own, theirs comes jig-notched and everything. I was a professional welder for a little while so doing the TIG welding wasn’t a big deal to me.

I’m in Rochester. Just moved here from the Chicago area! It is free to attend, and you missed the events at MIS. You can check out all the events at detroit-scca.org
They do have an event on Belle Isle this summer, that would be real cool to bring the little guy to!

I’ll have to try and make it to one. I’m hoping to order the Radiator today, I wanted to be in the car show for Canton Liberty Fest (I live in Canton), but seriously, 2 miles and overheat. I can’t be in a carshow like that and the show is this weekend (of course).
Let me know if you’re down in the Canton area.

Will do!
See, you just need to do what I did and replace the old SBF with some new, but very cheap, hotness.

Very cool. I’d love to get to the point where I would be confident enough in my welding to install a cage. I saw in another post that you design engines...me too, albeit I’m very new.

Nice thing about welding is that grinders exist...if you mess it up just grind it away. Metal is cool like that. Practice makes perfect.
Yea, I work for FEV, you’ve probably heard of us if you’re in the engine design area! I just moved here for the job about 6 months ago.
![]() 06/15/2015 at 10:17 |

Haha. I’m really trying to keep the engine. I have even kept all the parts I’ve taken off of it.
It’s all numbers matching and I have the original window sticker from the dealership it was bought from. If I didn’t have the window sticker, I would be tempted to swap the motor/trans. Would be willing to change the color of it, etc. But when you display a window sticker at a car show that says 302 V8 Cardinal Red C4 Merc-O-Matic and you have a 390 (or bigger) big block with a 4 speed manual in a Black car, people are going to scratch their heads not applaud you for saving an impossible to find 68 Mercury Montego MX Cyclone Package.

Okay...you got me. That would be sacrilege. Guess you need a Fox body to have fun with then....

Yup! I’ve got a lot of spare discs for my angle grinder and have been practicing with a cheap MIG. The welds are starting to look a bit less sloppy :)
Sure have...I’m over at the blue oval. Moved here about a year ago as well...welcome to Metro Detroit!

lol.
My wife wanted me to do everything all black on the car and I had to explain why I couldn’t do that with the sticker. It has 60k original miles on it too by the way.
So, it keeps the red outside, keeps the black vinyl top, and black vinyl interior. under the hood the blue goes away and is going to be black with red detail.
The Plan is the outside will be red with black detail, interior/under hood is black with red detail.
So far here’s the progression under hood.
When I bought it:
Now:
(sorry didn’t mean to jack your thread here lol).
Like I said, anytime you’re down this way let me know, you can stop by and check out the Montego. I was thinking about eventually getting new front shocks/springs to lower the front end a few inches (to bring us back around to the thread topic!)

How is working at Ford? Seems like a lot of engineers are moving to the area....always a good sign.
![]() 06/15/2015 at 10:44 |

Looks good! I like those valve covers. I will surely let you know if I’m heading down there, get that beast fixed!
Also, if you get springs/shocks....BILSTEIN. lol.

Also, if you need some welding pointers I’d be happy to help! Check out your local community college for a welding class, usually they aren’t that expensive and they’re fun. It’s how I got certified.

Might take you up on that! Sorry for hijacking your thread as well haha.
Lot of new people coming in for sure. It’s hard to argue with the benefits, but there are frustrations with working for such a huge company as would be expected.

Blue Oval guy? I’ve been doing advertising for Ford/Lincoln (and once upon a time Mercury) for 6 years altogether now. If you get confident enough on welding to patch some floor pan holes, come on over the beer’s on me.
I assume you’re around Metro Detroit, you working in Dearborn? Allen Park? Welcome to the family my friend.

Thank you! I’ve been wanting these valve covers for YEARS and just got them installed about a month ago. I love them and I’m so glad I went with the tall deck ones with the hard edges instead of the soft/curved edge ones, just look awesome. I wanted the Black with Red Ford Racing air cleaner, but the Edelbrock one was a gift, and at least it’s black. Maybe one day. I also have an Edelbrock intake on it, so it makes sense. And it hides the 4 barrel Holley I put on there.

You can’t hijack the INTERNET! lol, yea I interviewed at GM and FCA but decided to go with FEV because of the size. Ford would have been hard to turn down, I’m a mustang guy!

mmmm....Holley. I miss having a carb car sometimes.
![]() 06/15/2015 at 11:32 |

come on over if you need to get your fix lol.
Also, I see you weld.
I’m in dire need of some welding help. I need some floor boards patched.
![]() 06/15/2015 at 12:39 |

Cool. I am based in Dearborn.
Not sure you want me to patch your floors, unless you like the idea of living on the edge and knowing that you might fall thru at any minute :)

LOL
Maybe I’ll see if DeWayneV8 can help me out. You’re welcome to come out whenever and check out the 68 Montego though. I’m in Canton, work up in Farmington. I used to work in Dearborn.
