I went to Supercar Sunday this morning with the intention of going home afterwards. That didn’t happen. Supercar Sunday turned into breakfast with friends (driving an S30, Z34 Nismo, BRZ and R32 GTR). That then turned into a drive down Mulholland with the BRZ and Z34, which then turned in to going to the San Marino Motor Classic (sponsored by Sage Automotive Group (among other groups) who deserves a HUGE shoutout because they got me in!)
This event was truly incredible. One of the rare instances where you never have to ask “Is it real?” There were not one, not two, but THREE real Cobras representing (2 289s and a 427). So many rare, beautiful and spectacularly cared for cars it was unbelievable.
The Porsche crowd had an incredible showing.
One of my personal favorites was this VERY well cared for 911T Targa. Not only has the owner taken amazing care of it, but he was a very nice guy too!
The 911 Speedster is an incredibly special creature.
Those wide flares combined with that low windshield make it look like nothing else on the road.
There were many tails out today, of both the whale and duck varieties.
I was a particular fan of this immaculate 930 (which won it’s class). And no, it’s not just because of the plate.
This was the first year Japanese cars were allowed to enter, and while not many did, the ones that did were pretty great.
There were THREE Datsun roadsters out.
The man in the back with the hat brought out his Mazda Cosmo. He also owns a Toyota 2000GT.
It was very entertaining to listen to people speculate about what kind of car it was.
There were a couple early XKs out, but this one stood out to me. The way the black paint helps accentuate the curve of the fenders and flatness of the side made it look spectacular.
Tatra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Somehow, I didn’t get a picture of the whole car, but this 3.0 CSL was amazing. Check out those vintage Alpina center caps and wheels!
Such a clean engine bay. It looked like it had never been driven. Hell, it’s probably cleaner than it was from the factory!
There were five 300SLs out today, 4 roadsters and a coupe.
Those door handles are such a special touch. I think that’s one of the reasons why the 300SL looks so much more elegant than the 190SL.
There’s no way my camera could accurately capture this color, but it was actually a light green.
Some newer bulls joined the party. Check out that cocaine/cocaine color combination.
This poor lotus was getting so little attention. I STILL LOVE YOU ESPRIT!
This is a masterpiece. The most incredible thing ever.
The non-US spec headlamps look so much better. Self leveling and angling!!!!
If racecars could tell stories....oh the stories this one could tell.
This one too. I can’t seem to remember the name for the life of me though. Definitely part Porsche
Those real Cobras? Here’s one!
Blue over red leather doesn’t normally work. It shouldn’t work. It so does. That interior is incredible.
There were more pre-war cars than you could shake a stick at.
Montreal!
I’m so awesome my headlights have louvers.
A classic Lamborghini. Can’t recall if this one was a 350GT or a 400GT. I think 400.
It was well used too. I love that.
Two very different cars with very different wood.
SQUEEEE!!!!!
I’ve seen this Dino in the past. It looks just as good, if not better, every time I see it. Shaved bumpers make a massive difference in modernizing the car.
The first event I’ve been to where there wasn’t a massive crowd of people around the LaFerrari. Most of the attendees seemed like they couldn’t have cared less.
From the Sage Automotive Group, a 67.5 Datsun 2000 low-windshield Roadster. I got a brief ride in this after the show.
They brought a Nismo GTR too. Supposidly, 1/50 in the US at the moment.
Just a Benz Patent Motorwagen cruising around. They were filming for some show.
The 288 GTO. Also a somewhat overlooked car at the show, shockingly.
The intercooler peaking from under the louvers.
The owner of this also has an automotive book store.
The Benz again.
Yep, that’s a real 356 Speedster. It looks so happy to be here. Bonus Range Rover SVR
Time for the awards! Each category went third place first, second place second, and first place last, so keep that in mind for the photos.
This 930 absolutely deserved the win. Probably the best kept 930 in the country. The judges said he even takes the engine out to do detailing work.
Duck, duck, whale! Wait, that’s not how it goes....
This metallic pink is just quiet enough to be awesome.
Those fins.....so sexy.
Fun fact: You could get early Avantis with EITHER a supercharger or air conditioning. Not both. This car was supercharged. It was easily 90º out today.
This car was pretty crazy (it got third place in the hot rod category). Owner by the Petersen Automotive Museum!
Those tails are glorious
I honestly think this Rod deserved the win. The nickel plating on the windshield and trim just makes the car. I believe this one was owned by Bruce Meyers.
The “woody” category.
I don’t even think the winner had any wood.
My personal favorite category...the 300SLs
Then the baby brothers.
Then the Japanese cars!
Shock of shocks, the Cosmo won (deservingly so)
A real Cobra in the back there....
Yes please. Two real 289 Cobras
Their big brother 427 was following behind.
Then some American muscle. Honestly, not my deal.
Pagoda time! The openness of the hard tops on these always amazes me. Remember when you didn’t have to meet safety standards and could have tiny pillars?
At that point, the LaF decided to leave. I must say, black is a fabulous color on these.
My my, that really does look out of place.
At this point, I decided it was time for me to leave as well. It was just too hot to stay any longer. I hitched a ride out to my car in the Roadster and called it a day.
...but not before getting a couple pictures of the Roadster and a buddy of mine in a Lotus (before dropping it off at the dealer).
I hope you enjoyed!

According to quantum mechanics, he went in two separate ways with 50% probability in each, until someone observes him and collapses the waveform.

Uh yes! So much nicer looking than that yellow thing.

Knockoffs + quickchange makes for an interesting combo.

Quickly change all the things!!

Man. Of the three hypercars, I like the LaFerrari the best, but this paint scheme simply does not work at all. Way too garish.

Now THIS is what a Ferrari should look like. Gorgeous!

100% agree

It always makes me happy that on a field full of insanely rare cars, no one was there in one of mine (or it’s variants).
Also, I always like to sit back and think of the collective value of all the vehicles on the field, good lord.

Now to combine those two things with quick-release connectors for the body tub and radiator shell and a modular engine and trans setup, and it can become 4+ different rods in one!

I am so jealous of that car show..

Thats actually a real cool color combo.

Yup, just scrolled down to post that.
That is Barry Mequiar (grey hair, black shirt) who hosts (and sponsors) the show Car Crazy... and at least partially owns the Mequiar’s company that makes car care products.

Knock-off center lugs, and quick change rear ends are both racing equipment for pit service.
Knock-offs (especially reverse thread on one side to avoid loosening at speed, which may actually be all center-lock setups...) were designed to aid in changing tires faster than four or five individual, smaller lug nuts... a knock off mallet can loosen and spin off the wing nut, as well as spin and seat the wing nut when the wheel is changed.
The Quick Change rear end is to allow pit switching the rear final drive ratio without having to disconnect the driveshaft or remove the axle from the drivetrain to gain service access.
It kind of makes sense that they are used together in a classic racing-spec hot rod, which is what Hot Rods were originally intended to be... post-war race cars (late-40s and on) built from pre-war-era used cars, stripped down to a minimum body, with performance parts and big swapped engines.

I know, it’s a combo that makes sense, it’s just one that you rarely see. With the kit-car style of building all Deuces 95% the same these days, even people who shell out for a quick-change (that they’ll nearly never use) rarely go all-in like this.

Agreed.
I want to see a 488-based special project that reincarnates the 288 GTO, along the same lines as the Eric Clapton SP that tries to emulate a modern take on Berlinetta Boxer.
I imagine that whatever the next special-production Ferrari V8 (Challenge Stradale, Scuderia, Speciale, etc...) could be officially named 488 GTO. If they somehow pull off a modernization of 288 GTO’s timeless form it will be about as close to a re-incarnation as Ferrari is likely to do.

I love this post, but is there any reason it has been shared 3 times? New material, updated info?

And these are the only photos you took?

I may have screwed this up, but it should have only been this repost. I posted it once yesterday morning and once right now.

I could have sworn I saw it in the afternoon yesterday too.
Regardless, I do need to remind you from the rules “If more than one week has passed from the date of the original share, and the topic is still highly relevant and would, in your eyes, benefit the community, you may re-share a topic once again.”

That’s an awesome showing!
Great pics - love the Countach, the Cosmo, all the 300SLs, the Ferraris and Porsches - screw it, I loved everything there.
I totally missed out on this event this year, just put a reminder on my calendar to make sure I don’t let it pass again next year.

Holy fuck the Infiniti Q29! I was thinking this morning about doing an Infiniti/Lexus hot rod write up tonight or tomorrow.

Oh god the VARIETY! So intense. I’d kill to see a Cosmo. I went to a Jap-Classic show once that had all manner of rare cars, including an Autozam AZ-1. No Cosmo.
