Seriously, who would ride a bike with no seat cushion? (Also, what is it?)

Looks like an early Suzuki GS.

People who like cafe racers.
They do it for looks like the guys who build hardtail bobbers and choppers.
Also, I have no idea what it is because it isn’t stock and I can’t see any manufacturers marks on it. It’s definitely Japanese in origin though, probably was something like a cb750 or a kawasaki kz. They call them universal japanese motorcycles in stock form because they all look roughly the same.

Tell me you didn't take that on Martha's Vineyard

I know the owner, it started life as an 81’ CB750 so it's a DOHC head

Mystery solved, but
Is there anything distinctive about it that we could have identified without knowing the owner?

I did. I happen to live there, so every street sighting you’re gonna see from me is from Martha’s Vineyard.

I live on the cape and work on MV almost every weekend, you really get to see some nice stuff over there this time of year.

You most certainly do (especially because my family owns a garage).
I live just a few houses down from that bike.

What garage if you don’t mind me asking? I’m a mechanic myself at Chatham Ford, my dad has a stupid 6.0L powerstroke so I spend a good number of Saturday’s on MV keeping that on the road.
