Well, here it is, in all it’s average glory: a 2011 Mazda 3 Hatchback.

It’s the S Model, which I think just means bigger engine. It’s a hatch which was a must for me. It’s an automatic. I know. I know already.

Kinja'd!!!

I search high and low for good deals on a Gen 1 Mazdaspeed3, however I got the job offer for my first post-grad job that I’ve really wanted in Kansas City. Since I have sold everything but my [still not functioning] STi and my beater Saturn, I needed to find a good car in about a week.

I came across this 2011 Mazda 3 Hatch in a color I actually quite like from a private seller with only 46k miles and picked it up for about $4k under KBB, so I’ll get all my money from it and then some.

Kinja'd!!!

Surprise surprise, the automatic is boring. Maybe I’ll get rid of it in a couple months, who knows. But for now, moving to a new city with a new job, these are my reliable and somewhat fun wheels. I’m still holding out for a Mazdaspeed3.

Kinja'd!!!

As you can see, I have tried to inject a bit more masculinity into it with black plasti dipped wheels and badges. It looks...slightly more manly. I’m already considered ripping the dip off the wheels.

A 3 is a sorority girl car?

In this year and color, it looks like one.

The speed3 had a lot more testosterone injected in it and the 2005-2009 model were a lot better looking in my opinion.

I like the color, though I’m confused as to what’s going on with the badges.

It’s plasti dip. You put it on thick last the last picture, and it peels off in a clean line.

My Grandma has a 2011 Sedan.

You also have a Grandma car in my eyes.

The manual on the early 3s was bad. CLutch was awful and shifter was okay at best. Maybe those are better? Idk. But it might be best to leave it alone on the transmission front and enjoy your corolla or civic that’s more fun. Cause that’s really all the 3 is is mazda’s compact that’s enjoyable to drive.

I always thought Mazda3 sedans looked like girl cars but the hatches were more guy-ish, if you will. I've had mine for six years now.

I had an 05 Mazda 3 hatch manual. It was a rubbery shifter and the clutch was kind of hard to read, but the who experience was enjoyable. They’re cheap compacts, but I think the Mazda is by far the best driving of the group.

There were a lot of manual hatched like I had, but the barely make any manual hatches from 2010-up. Basically I’d have to get that generation’s speed3, which would bump my price up another $5k.

I’ve owned tons of different manual stuff before, it’s just a matter of learning it.

The hatch is apparently not as popular among young males. As a result, the insurance is much cheaper than on the sedan... My girlfriend’s theory is that it is a grandma car, too.

I really wanted my Grandma to get the hatch but she hates hatches and suvs. Her dream car is a modern DeVille/DTS.

She ended up getting the Sedan, in the Mazda red (I chose the colour) I was like, 14-15 in 2011 though, Today I would probably have way more influence on a car for her. It’s pretty good bar the gas mileage. Which is just OK. It’s fun to drive and I love the manual mode (forget what its called). Sound system is fantastic too!

I’d go natural on the wheels, but the black badges are pretty cool. It’s a great choice, even with the auto, provided the auto is anything like the one in my GF’s Mazda3. It downshifts, it rarely gets confused about which gear to be in, it’s smooth, and yet it has fast lockup. Good suspension, too, for a car that isn’t even really seen as sporty.

She’s a screaming nice ride...

agree about the 05-09 - no “smiley” grill, (I’ve got an 09.) But that is nice, I like the plastidip wheels. I think its those stock silver wheels that can give that model the sorority vibe. Honestly, as a daily driver I would prefer that with the NA 2.5 than the more temperamental Speed. Sounds like you got a heck of a deal on it too.

That is true - the gas mileage is nowhere near as good as I would expect, especially with a lot of city driving.

It’s been a problem with Mazda 3s. Thats why they spam skyactive all the time now.

lollllllllllllllllllll bless your heart!

First off: Mazda 3, a “sorority girl car?” What kind of broke ass sorority houses are you familiar with?? House manager didn’t let us park anything less than Audi/BMW/Mercedes/Land Rovers outside of ours. Unless you’re trying to imply something else with that statement.

And secondly, if you’re trying to ‘inject masculinity’ (lol, phrasing anyone?) into a car, you’re already losing. My dad drove a pink Mercury around for a few years, zero fucks given. But what would I know?

Oh and PS, seeing as I’m a sorority alum (and currently advising a local chapter), I guess we can accurately call this a sorority girl’s car:

Watch out with those testosterone injections, sure you’ll build some muscle but I hear there’s a lot of nasty side effects.

I don’t think the 3 is girly. What is it with Mazda cars? Miata, 3, early RX. Why do people characterize them as girly?
