That this
Weighs the same as this
but is powered by the engine out of this

been doing it like that for ages too

We take horsepower for absolute granted here in the US.

Isn’t that standard practice?

totally. Although even the gen2 EV in the states got the VR6 with all of 140HP

My buddies dad had an EV with the 2.5 growing up. did I mention we live in the mountains? yeah.

yeah the 2.5 was weak and blew head gaskets all the time even at sea level!

And has as much torque as this
;)

Eurovans are terrible.

or this, truthfully
The 62 sure weighed a lot less though, even the early FJ80’s weren’t too lardy, about 1000 lbs lighter than the VW. Also, this is more than 20 years later. Amazing

Bear in mind that if you’re buying either the Golf or the California in their country of origin they might not have the same engine as the Golf TDi usually manages with a 1.6.

truth, but the engine in the USDM golf tdi is (for all intents and purposes) the 140 ps engine in the california.

Why are these T5 VW Transporters terrible? I see tons and tons of these on the road, owned by businesses. Contractors, taxi fleets, you name it. If companies keep buying them there must be something decent about them.
![]() 06/11/2015 at 16:43 |

They’re grossly underpowered, poorly-built, and literally every other van/minivan is better.

They offer similar engine options as the competition, and many people seem to prefer them to the competition, year after year. Just looking at the numbers I sincerely doubt they’re worse than other panel vans/taxi vans/campers.

Eurovans come with small 5-cylinder units, while an Odyssey comes with a 3.5 V6. We owned a Eurovan before getting an Odyssey, and my dad recalls feeling surprised by how much more powerful the Odyssey felt than the Eurovan.

The Odyssey is a minivan though, not a panel van/camper. Anyway, judging by the many late model VW Transporters I see blazing past on the left lane of the highway I’d say they’re adequately fast. Unlike their 1980s brethren, those really were severely underpowered with their 55 hp or so base 1.6 NA diesels.

You can get them with a 200 hp TSI or a 180 hp TDI (with optional 4motion) as well though, both of them very torquey engines. More than adequate for such a vehicle I’d argue. It’s a camper van, not something for stop light sprints.

On the UK site I only saw 140ps and 180ps

I saw a whole variety of engines in the California PDF I found on the VW site. 62, 75, 84, 103, 132 kW TDI engines and 110 and 150 kW TSI engines seem to be available. 1 kW = 1.34 hp.
I used the Dutch VW site as the German one kept redirecting me to their shitty mobile site.

wow, 62 kw...I can’t even.

Would you be surprised to learn that if I went to my local VW dealer a Transporter would come with a four cylinder engine without the option of anything else due to the lack of demand for anything bigger?
