Hot Rod Power Tour 2015, Day 2: Murphy's Law

Everything that can go wrong, will go wrong. That’s what I learned yesterday on Power Tour.

About 30 minutes after a hospitality stop at Heidt’s rod shop in Lake Zurich, my clutch cable broke. A previous mounting had damaged and frayed the cable, leading to hours on end of stop and go traffic wearing it until is finally broke in Naperville. On the bright side, this is an extremely easy to service part, and I happened to be only 10 miles from the O’Reilly’s regional distribution warehouse, who had two cables in stock. 45 minutes late I was back on the road, but taking the fastest route to Champaign, IL.

Well I thought it was the fastest. I picked a route on google maps that was supposed to use the interstates, but it rerouted me to the default shortest route after confusing me for being on the frontage road. This lead to nearly an hour wondering where the hell we were going, as the fastest route uses back farm roads that are plain sketchy.

After finally making it back to the interstate, we noticed that a really really bad storm with hail in it was moving next to us, but along the interstate, and the clutch cable delay allowed us to miss the hail and only follow the outskirts of the storm.

Other than that, some rain here and there, Heidts was cool, and we got free Vienna Beef hot dogs! Lots of stop and go traffic, mostly because we were trying to stuff thousands of cars through some tiny lake towns. Champaign got hit by another big storm, luckily just hard rain, but that was overnight. We missed the entire show that day, but with all the rain we didn’t feel like we were missing much.
