!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . But my day could’ve been worse. Earlier yesterday morning I passed this, which is the mangled wreck of a schoolmate’s lifted Cherokee. Another car clipped it, and over it went. He was okay, but the jeep is not. Anybody know why the airbag did not deploy? Is it just because the sensor is in front, which is the only part not wrecked?

Front and rear end impact sensors didn’t get set off maybe. That looks rough. Although the seating area seems to have gotten through fairly well.

Were the doors already off? I assume so. I’m not sure I like that on a Cherokee.

Yup, that’s most likely the reason. Or, the Cherokee was in an accident at one point and the steering wheel was put back together without one.

That thing is a mess, glad to hear he was okay. Did he take the doors off or did EMT's do that?

Aw, lost all his tire fluid. That stuff is harder to replace than blinker fluid.

Only joking ‘cause he’s ok.

Front sensor wasn’t activated, so no front airbag. Then again, maybe older airbag sensors are just shitty because when my girlfriend crashed into a tree, the front airbags didn’t go off and we definitely hit on the front of the car, which was from ‘97.

I’m pretty sure that the frontal impact bag goes off only with enough deceleration that would make passengers move towards the bag. Side bags go off more easily as side crashes do not generate very high forces compared to the frontal impacts. One of my friends managed to get his side bag deploy (in fact that happened twice) by driving into a pothole.

I would assume in his garage.

Doors were already off.

OK :) I’m glad your buddy is OK though. But.. removing the doors.. isn’t that rather detrimental to the structural integrity of the car?

Not trying to spark a huge debate here, just wondering.

Only met him a couple times.

I would assume it doesn’t help.

Yea, I’m leery of older bags as well. Not only do you not know the history of older used cars, but now this Takata thing...

Also, more of a Jeep concern, but most aftermarket bumpers mess with the sensor calibration. I only know of one aftermarket bumper manufacturer that advertises their bumpers have been designed and tested to function with the OEM sensors. Safety equipment isn’t my specialty though.

Worth it for how bad ass it looks. But seriously, is that legal? I’m going to have to de-door the focus for the summer.

Yup. 80% of Wranglers I see in the summer have no doors.

Oh I wasn’t even considering Wranglers. I think doors were an after thought with those. I’m just talking about normal cars. Of course it won’t be as easy as lifting the doors off the hinge like a wrangler.

No airbag deployment because the front didn’t get hit. It’s just about the only part of the Jeep that’s perfectly intact. Glad he’s OK!

It’s common practice on old Cherokee and Wranglers, I assume cause the owner wants to show off how manly his leg hair is

I know it is, but still.. Can’t help but thinking it’d be a bad thing in a crash though.

It is part of the structure, since it’s a unibody.

No doors means no mirrors, no mirrors means crashy crashy crash crash crash.
