I wouldn’t agree with that. It’s an SL-Class Mercedes, of which tons have been made when compared to the Viper. Then again there are people who don’t consider American cars exotics for whatever reason.

People need to pick a definition of exotic and stick with it. You can choose

1. introduced from another country : not native to the place where found< exotic plants>

2. strikingly, excitingly, or mysteriously different or unusual < exotic flavors>

Technical its an exotic by virtue of #1 if you bought it outside Germany. As it related to #2 - meh, I guess. I personally love the SL55 AMG, looks mainly, but to each their own.

I wouldn’t call it exotic.

The Black Series I would call an exotic because it had a very limited production of 350 units. The SL65 was a “regular” production vehicle - nothing special besides being the-then range topping SL.

At the same time, you can’t apply the definition 1 to vehicles. Almost every other vehicle on the street would be an exotic car, which is not the purpose of calling certain cars “exotics”.

Good question. I’d point if I saw the F430, but I’d make monkey noises if I saw the Spyker. They’re both exotics in my opinion, mostly because seeing Ferraris isn’t common place.

As far as I know, the production numbers for the SL65 were far below that of say, the Gallardo. SL65’s were (are) pretty uncommon.

They were under 2,000 I would say, but at the same time it’s just an SL with the most expensive engine option. Just because no one orders a vehicle doesn’t make it an exotic (see GMC Syclone). I would say that there are some marques that are considered exotic because of the marque itself. There is no such thing as a non-exotic Ferrari or Lamborghini. The amount of vehicles they produced and the cost and materials that go into making them all contribute to this.

I think we have differing definitions of what qualifies as an exotic car. A Saleen S7 is an exotic car. A Ford GT is an exotic car. They are both American. Being exotic an being from the same country are you are not mutually exclusive.
