Approved On Jezebel, Not Jalopnik

Imagine my surprise when I clicked over to an interesting piece on Jezebel, wrote a reply to someone whose viewpoint I agreed with...and found that I was an approved commenter over there. Any of you who have seen my posts probably would be as shocked as I was (and still am) about this.

Meanwhile, after being a visitor to this site since the beginning and a user for about the last 6-7 years, I still cannot get one single FP writer to approve my comments or even acknowledge them. I’m about ready to call it quits, I used to enjoy that place, but it’s clear that they aren’t interested in the way things used to be. I certainly don’t need it to survive, and god knows there’s more important uses of my time than Jalopnik. But, there were many people I had gotten to know who I now cannot interact with, since my comments many times don’t even show up. I enjoyed the community at one point in time, now I no longer can and it feels rather empty.

I still enjoy Oppo though, even though I don’t get a chance to engage much with the people here. I’m hoping someone from the other side sees this and has the fortitude to explain this, otherwise I suppose I’ll just become a casual Oppo reader and not much else.

I hate drawing attention to myself more than almost anything in the world, but I feel this isn’t about me, and there’s several others who feel this way. And we already lost KDS due to the same type of behavior from the FP writers. I cringe at the thought of this continuing. Hopefully this pseudo-censorship thing they’ve got going on can be fixed.

Ironically it seems to be really easy to be approved on Jezebel. Still think that grays are used to control the comments. I find that it’s nearly impossible to be ungrayed on deadspin.

Yeah I mean that’s the only ones where I show up. Unfortunately I’ve noticed that since my banishment to the grey, my comments never really seem to show up on the other general FP pages. Idk if the site is borked on my end but that just seems to be the case.

For me it’s just more about the fact that they just don’t seem to care about it there, and that saddens me. Like I said...it doesn’t ultimately affect me, it’s a website made of 1s and 0s. But...it was fun the old way, I thought. Either way, Oppo is still fun and enjoyable.

I’ve commented a few times on Deadspin but coincidentally not much since the grey thing was instated. I realize why it’s there but it was just very disappionting that they stripped me of it after I had been “approved” or whatever term they used before, for years, and then once they took it away, refused to acknowledge it whatsoever. Seemed a bit childish..but hey, I can’t force their hands.

Well, on Jalopnik, after many well meaning long form intelligent comments I was pulled from the gray by making an incredibly over played (and not especially funny) joke about the BRZ not having enough power.

Tis a mystery how they select.

Evan, I’m pretty much of a noob to all of this but my suspicion is that there is simply an immense volume of traffic on those boards and the mods — or whatever they are called — can’t keep up with it.

The thing that gets me is that I was approved, for a while, then they pulled it after I was swarmed by a rather angry group of feminists after suggesting that women in third world countries were far more oppressed than white, middle-aged feminist housewives in America. It was on that post about the asshole in Saudi Arabia (I believe) who basically said “We don’t let women drive here in case the car brakes down and they get raped by the side of the road”...got cross-posted to half the Gawker sites, cause clicks, and hilarity ensued. Shortly after that I was banned to the greys, and all attempts to regain it back have been ignored. So...yeah. I don’t know.

I’d agree except I was approved and then they pulled it. And it happened on the same day on both Giz and Jalop, two sites I was very active (and approved on) for years. So that seems more than a little suspicious. Otherwise I’d totally agree.

Jez and Deadspin are the only two main pages I’m not approved on. I really want to get them all just to say that I’ve got them all ;)

I might try that, it seems so silly to escalate it like that but I suppose its worth a shot. I do recall when KDS tried that, he got some snark and then was ignored some more, so I’ve sort of assumed it wasn’t worth the time.

I’m new here, as I said before, but I’ve been around the track a few times, including public school administration. The snark reply to KDS, if we read the same one, was vague. I really think that the people running the show are completely buried and also thoroughly distracted by deciding whether or not to unionize.

I think you have everything to gain by sending an email. The editor-in-chief of Jalopnik — Travis Okulski — comes across as very reasonable in an email message. I bet if you sent him a polite email using the same tone you’ve used in this thread with me, you’d get a satisfying response. You probably already know this, but his email is travis@jalopnik.com

Most of us take our commenting seriously and want to be taken seriously and you probably got canned by mistake or in some sort of purge or clean-up.

I had a comment a few months back on the FP that got 90-something stars and I'm still in the gray. Then again, I got comment-raped on a crossposted FP article about a year ago so maybe that's why. Did you ever get approved?

I emailed them and got it straightened out, apparently I had been “blocked” or something. But yeah I’m approved now. Sounds like what happened to me...you should try emailing the higher-ups and see what happens.

Approving comments means we have to actually approve of them. I skim the comments on my posts or the larger posts from others, but this greying setup is the only way to keep everybody (but you guys) happy.
