This begins with your humble author waiting patiently for his email confirmation and parts invoice containing the following:

1 Rear Driveshaft w/u-joint conversion kit

1 Up-stream O2 sensor

1 set stainless steel braided extended brake lines

1 set HD steering rods w/tie ends

1 Terrafirma 3” lift shock absorbers and springs

1 F&R set vented solid brake rotors

1 set ceramic “ultra-premium” brakes pads

HOLY SHIT!!! THANKS VA!!!! I am finally lifting the Disco to the height she should have been from the factory. (I have already converted the front driveshaft to a Tom Woods HD unit)

In other news, since the new Fallout game has been announced I will have no choice but to finally purchase a next gen console, or if this guy on craigslist will respond to my messages I could by his desktop and be fine for any next gen game coming out for the next 2 years.

I am attempting to convince my wife to allow me to install the shocks and springs myself, I will update on how that mission goes. Nonetheless, the lift will be installed in the next 2 weeks and awesomeness will be occurring.

For your time and viewing pleasure my rig parked next to another Rover enthusiasts rig with pretty much the full setup I want to mimic. I wish I could have bought his when he was selling it 2 years ago, but alas no money back then.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And the Rovers North and Lucky 8 press rigs. I really want those Dakar wheels on my rig. Bonus, the “Unicorn DII” from Lucky 8 is one of the only manual transmission DII’s in the country. (Like 1 of less than 10)

I’m not a big Rover guy, but I have to say, I’m glad you didn’t buy his because that blue looks awesome man.

I’ve owned mine since 2007 and almost bought his to strip it of all the good bits, put them on my blue one and sell what was left.

Nice! Can’t wait to see how it looks. Are you doing 33 or jumping up to 35 inch tires?

....was planning on staying around 31’s or at max 32’s. Still trying to advise the esposa of whether a roof top tent is better or doing the trailer.

i say trailer because what if my rig get stolen or wrecked?

We’ve been discussing trailers and RTT’s over on Overland for a while. I like the idea of the RTT, but if its just 2 people than my vote is internal bed platform. if its more than 2 my vote is trailer. 31 inch tires and a 3 inch lift is going to be interesting.

Well it will just be strange looking to have a big lift and smaller tires. Maybe its different with the disco than it is with the cruiser but even my 50mm lift kinda looks strange with my 33 inch tires as they sometimes look too small. I won’t do 35 because I don’t see the point but for looks its a little odd. whats the stock size?

I’m not on stock tires I am on 30’s presently. And they are General Grabber AT’s with a lot of life lieft in them so I will likely keep them on and buy a new set of wheels and maybe something slightly more aggressive Nitto’s and Cooper Discoverer’s get good reviews in the community.

The problem with the Cruiser is the body mass, the cruiser has a much larger and beefier body than the disco. People forget that the Disco has the same wheelbase as a Mini Cooper (BMW era). I want to either get the Rovers north Dakar wheel set or source a set of G4 challenge 18” 6 spoke wheels and fit new tires to them.

Kinja'd!!!0

fair enough, what is the stock disco tire size? Stock tire for the 80 series is 31 (275/70r16) so I assumed it must be in the same general neighborhood. You’re right about the wheelbase, its a foot shorter than the 80, I didn’t realize they were so dissimilar. A little less than 2 inches narrower but only 4.5 inches shorter overall...interesting.

Very nice. I just did shocks and spring spacers on my land cruiser. While I didn’t have to deal with a solid front axle, the theory is the same. I say go for it as long as you have the tools. My shocks were frozen on, so my impact wrench was a necessity.

I’d say they’re actually beefier than the ARB’s, I’ve seen ARB’s flex when under heavy winching. Plus I can actually jack the truck up on these things.

Don’t have the exact weight off the top of my head but I went with a 2inch HD spring so I’m probably at around a 1 3/4 inch lift now with the extra weight. I mean these bumpers are heavy.

06/03/2015 at 15:06

I don’t really know that i need that technical of a tire right now. I am likely going to get another set of wheels for true overlanding usage and keep just a general AT on the stock wheels for 70% usage. I don’t want to get to far ahead of myself, bigger tires = HD axles + lockers + modded gears

I am trying to convince the esposa to allow me to do the lift by myself. The brakes, brake-lines, rear driveshaft will be done by a trusted mechanic

You can get away with 32’s on stock axles, you just can’t get too stupid with them. My truck is my weekend toy so it doesn’t see that many miles and I can get away with one set. If I do start using it more I’d get another set of rims and run cheaper tires. These tires are awesome though, no real chunking when your climbing over rocks.

Get another disco, preferably with a shit engine or transmission, turn it into a camping trailer. Cut off the front at the firewall and fabricate the trailer tongue there. Bam. Off-roadable awesome trailer that can be comfortably camped in.
