I am looking at getting my 17 yr old a beater to get him around from point A to B but it needs to be relatively safe cause DC is a driving nightmare and from time to time he’ll be shlepping my other kids around.
I came across a 2004 Volvo S-60 for 2500 bucks. 160K on it but it has a salvage title. Should I instantly be put off by the salvage title?

Depends on the damage. A new bumper might give a 2004 S60 a salvage title.

I don’t know about the salvage title, but I commute into dc every day, I have a 2005 v70r which is basicly the same car;
2 points
I know should be looked at to tell how well car was maintained, 1 is the PCV system should have been replaced around 150k
The other is timing belt, which should also have been changed around the same time.

Buy him a 2002 Eldorado. Also give him money for 2 15” kicker subs. He will thank you from the bottom of the mountain of poon he is drowning in. You’ll be the best Dad/Mom ever.

FUCK. YES.
Make sure you have money for 120 spoke 20s and Vogues though, you don't want him looking like he doesn't know what he's doing.

Because every 17 yr old kid needs a fwd 290 hp car that has more torque steer than a tractor pull :) My 70 year old mother had one of those Eldorados and the torque steer was impressive...
