I’m guessing you’re not using windows but mac?
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:39 |

Nope Windows 7, but Windows 8 was some shit so I’ll pass on 10.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:42 |

10 will address all the problems that 8 had. Yeah I’m looking forward to it.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:43 |

I’m looking forward to continuing my use of Windows 7, because all the other ones are stupid.
Lots of places still use XP, haha.

You sure?

Pretty much.

I think I’m gonna wait a little bit. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it am I right? I’ll wait until I actually can’t run something I want to run on 7 before upgrading.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:56 |

If all the shit they’re saying about DX12 is true...hnnnggggg.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:57 |

10 is meant to be the best of 7 & 8 + win 7 support will eventually end and then you will either be stuck with an OS that is not getting updates or have to buy a license for 10, if your not 100% sure on it right now, get a VM running with the tech preview whilst you still can
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:58 |

Vista with SP2 is basically just Win7 with a more attractive interface.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:59 |

But what about 2000, 8.1, 98SE, 3.11, WFW, etc?
2000 was the tits, 98 was shit, 98SE was the tits, 3.11 was far better than 3.1, WFW was even moar better.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:59 |

Windows 8 is broke.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 15:59 |

Officially, it’s to signal that 10 is a fresh start, and not just a continuation of 7 and 8.
Reportedly, it’s because a lot of software would check to see if someone was running an old version of windows by just seeing if the version started with “9”, so a “windows 9” would trip a lot of “You need a newer OS to run this” messages.

Windows 8 was bad enough to finally push me over to a Mac the last time I bought a computer.
My gf needs a new one soon. Her current computer is running 7 but it’s old and heavy and she wants something lighter. Since she’s going to have to learn a new OS either way with Windows 10 or Mac, really the only thing keeping her leaning towards a Windows machine is price.

Macs are becoming garbage, frankly. Overpriced fashion items.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 16:08 |

I've always found this to be fact. They make all kinds of changes for the bad ones, let everyone complain about the nuances. Then they fix them all for the next OS
![]() 06/01/2015 at 16:09 |

They’re falling into the Toyota mindset. If you don’t need to make it any better to push units, why would you?
![]() 06/01/2015 at 16:21 |

that’s why i buy old used one and fix them up, and upgrade them

8.1 is pretty usable, and hella fast on SSD.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 17:01 |

And way more secure than Windows 7 as well.

I had very specific features I wanted and in my case the only Windows machine with similar specs to my MBPr 13 was $300 more. I didn’t want to spend $300 more for the one with the OS that I hated.
My gf is not as particular about gadgets as I am so she should be fine with a Windows 10 laptop assuming Windows 10 actually doesn’t suck, and we are not a household that’s stuck one one particular company’s products.
Last week I bought her a perfectly decent Acer 8” Android tablet to replace her 2012 Nexus 7 that’s been running like shit ever since the Lollipop update. It was 120 bucks and she’s totally happy with it.
A laptop is a bit outside price range of me just making an impulse buy on one for her. Unless it’s a Chromebook...maybe.

Yes! They’re appealing to those who believe 7 is the best... but forgetting about Vista (da worst.)
![]() 06/01/2015 at 17:19 |

Just make sure you’re not on Legacy support, otherwise...
![]() 06/01/2015 at 17:45 |

You’re going to miss out. Win10 is leagues ahead of Win7 plus the upgrade doesn’t kill your current 7 license. You can always downrev if you want.
PS: Plenty of people are still using XP because plenty of people are stupid
![]() 06/01/2015 at 17:48 |

Nah, I will stick with 7 until SteamOS comes out of beta. Then Microsoft can lick my taint.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 17:53 |

Well, lots of specialized software only runs on XP Pro.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:03 |

You want to be tied to a software that runs on an unsupported OS, be my guest.
Disclaimer: My company software does not run on Windows 8/10/2012. We hired a new dev team to fix that.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:10 |

Why didn’t you grab Win 8 when it was $30? That would have been a ticket onto the Win10 train.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:14 |
|
And if you had Windows NT, you got to skip all the crap that was in 95, 98, and ME before buying 2000...which was just another version of NT with a different name.
Also, the reports of 8 being terrible are greatly exaggerated; it even improves performance. Vista wasn’t even that bad, but Vista did have a performance penalty so I let it stay in the bad category.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:15 |

Not even. Runs more stable than 7 ever did.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:24 |

Where I work, we ran Ubuntu and it was a fucking nightmare.
![]() 06/01/2015 at 18:56 |

Technically, Windows 8 is superior in every way to previous versions.
The user experience suffered a bit, however. But a lot of this was fixed in Windows 8.1, and even more in 8.1u1
![]() 06/01/2015 at 19:32 |

Don’t you shit on 98. She was a gem of an OS.

It didn’t even have USB support. SE had USB support.

I barely noticed the lack of a Start button in Windows 8, and any other UI deficiencies have been forgotten. For both 8 and 8.1, though, the speed and stability of my computer have been better than they ever were with 7. I would get random, infrequent crashes with 7, and I’ve never had that problem with 8/8.1. I’m even hesitant to actually follow through on the upgrade to Windows 10, since it’s that good and because I worry about UI inconsistencies with 10. The direction they are taking the icon aesthetics, especially the charms, bothers me; all thin and Android-looking.
![]() 06/02/2015 at 00:28 |

Don’t forget Windows NT, which in my experience was a damned solid OS...
![]() 06/02/2015 at 09:02 |

So NT would be... NT 3.1, NT 3.5, NT 3.5.1, NT 4.0, then 2000, XP, XP 64-bit, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10...
Or if you wanted to include server OSes...

The biggest win for me with 8.1 was driver support. So many new network drivers that work out of the box compared to win7. Which is great, because as long as you have network you can get any other drivers you need through Windows Update or OEM websites.
