Yeah yeah, some of the those were in the 2000’s, but I don’t know what you would call them. The naughties? Regardless, I think they greatly misinterpreted what customers wanted in terms of “retro”

I think out of those the T-Bird had the best potential for actual success.

But wasn’t the handling horrible? I’ve heard that they float all over the place and have super soft suspension.

they then hit the original mark. the 55-57 birds are horrid driving for cars even for 50's standards.

Actually, I sorta liked the design after owning and taking care of one for a few years. The letdown (that wasn’t ignitiongate) was the absolutely HORRIBLE kid-friendly cheap-ass plastic interior.

A lot of those cars were pretty big hits when they came out. The PT is a joke now, but had a massive waiting list when new.

Yeah, there’s been a lot of retro hits and misses over the years.

The T-Bird had a lot of potential, but certainly fell short. I personally loved the look of it.

The PT Cruiser wouldn’t have been so wrong, had the Plymouth brand still been around and they ended up building the other cars they had planned in the series (like the Pronto Spyder).

The SSR was pretty neat in my opinion, but it was a bit flawed and the LS2 and Tremec T-56 came too late.

The New Beetle was alright as a VW, but not 100% alright as a Beetle. Especially in comparison to today’s Beetle.

The HHR also looked really good on the outside, but like daender said, the interior was cheap and the only models that ended up being worth owning were the SS, Panel, and SS Panel versions.

Personally, if there’s anywhere that’s gotten retro right without getting it wrong much, if at all, is Japan.

Take the Pike Factory cars, the Figaro, Be-1, Pao, and S-Cargo. Those four all turned out to be pretty cool.

Even today, Japan makes some really neat retro cars.

The Daihatsu Mira Cocoa, Honda N-One and N-Box Slash, Suzuki Alto Lapin and Alto Lapin Chocolat, and the retro themed Mitsuokas (basically all Mitsuokas other than the Orochi for example.

The only Japanese retro fails I can think of are the Mitsubishi Pajero Jr Flying Pug and the Subaru Impreza Casa Blanca (the similarly themed Vivio Bistro was MUCH better looking).

The SSR at least could be had with a 6.0 and manual. The Tbird could of been ok if it wasnt so neutered.

Unpopular opinion time: I think both the T-bird AND SSR are cool and would own/drive either

Retro is just another way of saying that the designers have run out of original ideas.

The build quality wasn’t great. I remember transporting a new one for the dealership and I ended up covered in water.
