While helping a friend navigate the jungle of a new car purchase, I discovered something I hadn’t thought much about today. The retail prices for Escalades, which I always have thought were overpriced Suburbans, have come very close to the price of not just a BMW sedan, but the ultimate BMW sedan.

Kinja'd!!!

Here we have a nice fully loaded Escalade for the low internet price of $94,925. While Cadillac has made leaps and bound in quality over the last few years, the Escalade is still a Chevy truck in a nice Tuxedo.

Kinja'd!!!

Now here is a brand new M5 with 105 miles, never titled and sold as new. Those miles have knocked $10,000 off of MSRP and you can pick this one up for $99,993. This is one of the greatest sports sedans ever built and the polar opposite of the Escalade.

I know these vehicles attracted different buyers, and I know this is not a real comparison of competing segments, but the question begs to be asked, is the Escalade Overpriced or is the M5 a performance bargain.

The M5 isn’t a performance bargain, but the Escalade is overpriced.

Why get a new BMW M5 when you can get an Escalade AND BE A BALLER.

because your last line, different buyers.

why buy a motorhome when you can get a ferrari?

and i wouldnt call the m5 a bargain, nor would i call the escalade overpriced. cts v is faster and cheaper and the escalades main competitor is the range and it costs roughly the same

Well this is the same strategy used by that one guy... Comparing costs of new peasant vehicles to used luxuries and exotics... OP here is using a similar conclusion as well: “One is the ultimate sedan and the the other is a tarted up Yukon.” so on, so forth.

I guess the real question is, which one would the Valet leave up front?

This is tough, but the newer M5’s have never tickled my fancy. The Escalade, however just keeps getting better and better.

My question is, is the Escalade worth $100k? Until today I had no idea they could be optioned out to be in spitting distance of that price.

If you owned an M5, would you let a valet touch it?

In a way, you pay a premium for just owning an Escalade. It still remains a head-turner and is the SUV choice of celebs, second to the G-Wagon I suspect. Hell no, I don’t think they’re worth $100k, but if it were priced closer to a top trim Yukon Denali (which by the way is over $70k!!!) it would lose a bit of that clout that helps make it desirable and a status symbol of sorts.

I try not to let Valet’s touch any of my cars but sometimes it unavoidable

You can’t tow 8,200 pounds with an M5 nor is the M5 4WD.

M5 has speed and power that you will use less than 10% of the time. The Escalade has presence, swagger, and boss-ness that can and will be used 100% of the time

But think of the ridiculous, gaudy, stupidly big shiny chrome rimzzzz you could buy for the Escalade with $5,068 price difference. That would totally make having the Caddy over the M5 in your garage a decision you could live with!

The swagger filter has to be replaced every 10,000 mile service though because it’s used to prevent essence of peasant from going through the air system and into the car.

Yukon XLs and Suburbans can run you 72k and you can call it a tarted up Yukon all you want (to which I say the M5 is just a tarted up 550) but it’s a decidedly better car than the Yuke.I know it’s hard to imagine autos costing that much because we remember when Escalades topped out at 70k and Yukons at 50 and M5s were 75k but inflation has hit. An E550 and 550 are 70-80k cars so the logical step for the 63 and M are 90k. Much like the logical advanced step for the Escalade is 90k as well, though let’s be fair here the base Escalade is 72k and more luxurious than the Yukon Denali so really we’re talking more in the 70-80k range.
