... after I removed the plastic cover under the car, I found this stuck on a nut at the round end:

Kinja'd!!!

This reinforces my view that the previous owner of my car took it to mechanics who were complete jackasses. Either that or it was left by the used car dealer mechanic where I bought the car.

And it’s another little reason why it’s a good idea to do as much work as you can yourself on your own car. They may know more than I do about fixing a variety of cars. But I make up for it by getting to know my car well and actually giving a shit when working on it and taking the time to do things properly.

And this isn’t the first time I’ve found crap left behind in the engine bay.

Anyway... I got my oil changed and I changed over my front marker lights and my trunk light to LED. Driver side front marker light is a real pain to get to... but managed it after some extra disassembly. Initially I wanted to put an LED in the dome light. But the Focus has a feature (when on the middle auto off/on setting) where the light dims and then goes out.

I suppose they do this to make the car more ‘luxurious’.

But after putting in an LED in, I could see that even after it was ‘off’, it was still drawing a little bit of current as the LED was still on dimly even though it should be completely off. And that could get annoying.

So I put the LED in the trunk light which turns off/on conventionally.

So I discovered dim-to-off lights on the Focus keep pulling a bit of current unless you switch them to the ‘always off’ setting. It’s not enough current to make a regular bulb illuminate at all. But an LED will glow dimly.

I have a hunch it’s a similar story on other cars and is one small way that explains why some modern cars will have dead batteries if you let them sit a couple of weeks.

I once found a bunch of wrenches, sockets and miscellaneous tools between the floor pan and the back seat frame in my last Audi . I kept running my hand around and each time pulled out another socket or driver or etc. lol. Someone also left their sunglasses back there too.

Cars are worth more when they come with the original toolkit though.

I see, I was going to say that if it was an earlier Focus I am perplexed by the 11mm. I have yet to use one on my mom’s as far as I recall.

This just shows how bad the mechanic were... maybe a dirty bolt that he had trouble fitting the 10mm over, so he just assumed next size up must fit...

Okay that makes sense. I know my Taurus and my mom’s focus(they are both quite a bit older) use mainly 8mm 10mm 13mm for most things. You could be worse off though, whomever installed the starter(that went out on me during an ice storm) thought instead of using a shrinksleeve that a housing wiring nut would be good enough.

7/8mm is a bit mixed yeah, but mostly 10,13 and then ocassional 17 normally. Housing wiring Nut? We luckily don’t have those over here, but we have equally worse things to use in high amperage connections... Scary stuff at times...

By housing wiring nut I mean the twist connection used for wiring in your house.

Thank god they aren’t common at all over here, we just have other alternatives, but atleast they screw terminals...

The only tool I ever found was one I left behind. Fixed the rattle and found my wrench at the same time!
