Brought the boat into the muffler shop today to finish up the exhaust.
I got it tucked in nice an high so it’s no longer inches from the ground.
While I was there they where like “Hey you should take the cats out. These 35 years old cats are probably constipated as hell”. May as well I’m already here.
Right now the exhaust sounds like shit but the more I drive the deeper the sound gets. I heard once that glasspacks need to sort of break in before they get their true sound, so hopefully it gets better with time.
I can always change out the muffler if it doesn’t get better.

Give it a little time. As that thing gets some Carbon buildup inside the sound will definitely improve.
Why didn’t you run duals?

So the muffler shop replaced your cats with “test pipes”? Most places I know of only do that if you tell them it’s only for off-road use.

The muffler guy suggested it. Because some cars back then didn’t have cats yet and because it’s over 25 years old he said I don’t need them. As well since Alberta has no emissions testing it’s pretty much no harm no foul.
My truck is an 86 with factory exhaust and it has no cats either.

I just wanted cheap replacement for the rusty exhaust that was in there. I’m planning to sell the car soon so no need for me to spend a bunch of money on it.

One thing I learned about glasspacks: Although it may seem obvious, don’t ever ever put your hand near one after the car’s been running. I found this out the hard way after I put mine on and drove it and then checked for leaks (I clamped the pipes)
They get very very hot very quickly. I still have a burn scar on my thumb.

The other thing I learned is when you clamp them they almost always leak. Welding it is the way to go and yes keep your hands off of them.

Told you that the $150 detail wouldn’t get the job done.

That’s because I didn’t do the $150 detail yet. It was raining that day and we cancelled it. I’ll get it done in the next week or two.

When I clamped mine, I had to really crank it down to get it to tighten, so yes I concur on the leaking. It seems the sizes given on them is merely a suggestion.
Which brand do you have, if you know?

It’s a purple hornie.

Spray some water into the glasspack with a hose and then get it good an hot with some driving.
It will crack the fiberglass packing and give it a better sound.
