Not in that generation (E39) but I believe we can now. I know we can get 3 series diesel.

Oh. Well, technically it is an 530d M Sport. Much like the M235i now a days...

However, it did not originally come on the car like that so your point is still valid.

I’ve seen a new 2-series with an M badge today, probably a 220d or something similar. I just can’t figure out what drives people to believe that is a cool thing to do. The people who won’t notice don’t care, the people who do notice know its bullshit.
