Why don’t we make a new spec racing series involving salvage title cars?
The idea is that you get a budget of $3,500 to spend however you want. You can buy one running car to participate, or 2 identical cars with one for parts, etc. But in the end you need to have one functioning car to enter the race.
Each race will have a set amount of time to do the most amount of laps, such as 24 Hours of Le Mans. Except that since these are salvage cars, they could die at any time and thus each race should probably be around 1-2 hours.
You can bring 1 co-driver to swap out if you need to. As for safety, I think that since these are salvage cars, they are probably going to die anyway, so no need for a roll-cage. Just have a fire extinguisher.
This series would basically be a test of how risky you can be. You can spend all your money on a fast but possibly unreliable car like this Mercedes “LA 250” (aka CLA),
And have it possibly die during the race, or go for a slow but trusty car like this Fit.
Once you purchase the car you can not attempt to repair the car except for adding fluids, and body contact during the races should be legal.
So what do you think of my crazy idea?

how long until the onboard electronics decide to throw the towel?

.420 milliseconds.

Pretty crazy. Maybe have 1 point for a lap and extra points for how close you can stay to car from another team. Sorta like a formula drift thing with points.

This sounds like so much fun!!!

I would like to note that rollcage is more for driver protection than car protection. That being said, do we get to keep it after the race?

That could make for some excellent racing.

Salvaged cars aren’t necessarily gonna be unreliable, just hard to sell.

...good idea

Points would also work too. Good idea.

If it still runs, of course. You paid for it, it’s yours. Just find a way to title it.

Well…

Like LeMons but with infinitely quicker cars.

Or you could repair them and get extra points for how well you managed it. Sorta like the Top Gear episode where they had the best cars for a teenager.

You could repair it as much as you could within your remaining budget. Perhaps you could get points for repairing it, but also deducted points for how much money you spent on the repair.

That’s what I was going for with the remaining money thing.

As a safety person I should hate this but I don't.

Wait,
People race clean title cars? I’ve been doing this all wrong...
In all seriousness, Id be on board if roll cages were required—ever been wheel to wheel racing where no driving experience is required? Also, with that budget I think most salvage cars would be far more reliable than Lemons cars that are pieced together.

Well regular racing was never safe, so what makes this different?
![]() 05/30/2015 at 00:51 |

Alright. I guess roll cages could be added.
I hope the salvage cars would be more reliable. Otherwise this would be LeMons version 2.0.

I think the lemons series should just raise the 500$ limit. I can’t find anything for that. 2500...I could do something.

unknown structural integrity of the vehicles

Most salvage cars have a salvage title, which here in TX at least isn’t too bad, you just have to fix whatever caused it and get a rebuilt title.

It will be a race series where most of the cars smell like a pond.

Your basically begging for track side fires.

Another stipulation should be allowing frame bracing in any areas where frame damage may have occurred
