Instead of lambasting them for making a grand coupe everything (
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
) I think BMW needs to drop the standard sedan. It would be risky, “But what about headrooom?!?!” Except that BMW already has options for those needs (X#, and “GT” body). I think anyone can agree that the 4GC and 6GC are better looking than the sedans they ultimately are derived from. I’d argue that style is more of a selling point to the BMW sedans than practicality. As I said, your average BMW family looking for utility is going to be looking at the X crossovers first anyways, or if they are blind a GT version. I see why they keep wanting to coupe everything (hint: the 6GC starts at nearly 30k more than the 5 series [although much of that has to do with no base model 6]) Nearly free margin boosters is a hard business model to argue against, but BMW can become a design and style leader overnight and be proactive in the defense of their German luxury throne.

It’s not that absurd of an opinion. You can already look at today’s mid-size sedans as a lot of them already do that for a mix of both style and increased aerodynamic efficiency. Just look at vehicles like the Fusion and 200 that already do that low-slung roof in the back.

But M5

But M6. Edit: there would still be an M5, but all 5 series would just have “coupe styling”

Wait, so you are trying to say that the 4 and 6 series gran coupes looks better than the 3 and 5 series, and that we should just eliminate the 3 and 5 series?

The German in me prefers the more conservative, restrained styling of the sedans, especially the 550 and M5. But I agree with you on the 6 series.
Also not sure if/how this would translate to the 7 series.

yeah, basically. It could still be called the 3 or 5 series since obviously the name has cachet, but I’m not going to predict what BMW would call it.
The names are made up and the rules don’t matter!

the 7 series is a thing?
I think that would be the biggest hurdle, but it could stay conservative. No one thinks of the 7 series when they think of BMW so either way I don’t think the styling wouldn’t make much of an impression on the public perception of BMW.

Why not just eliminate the 2-4-6-8 nomenclature? 1-3-5-7 should just denote platform size, and the doors could be added/removed however people wanted? It makes no sense to say “odd numbers have 4 doors, even numbers have 2 doors. Except for gran coupe even numbers, those also have four.”
Making a four door version of a two door version of a four door version is incredibly inane.

Generally car enthusiasts don’t care so much about the 7, but other buyers do. And it’s huge in China.

China maybe, but compared to the S class and A8 the 7 series is far behind here.

But the Gran Coupes are ugly.

True, but I personally prefer the regular sedans to the gran coupes.
