I’m helping my friend’s father with the purchase of a used car. (!)
Here’s what he’s looking for:
$15,000 (ideal) to $20,000 maximum.
It is going to be a backup car they can take to the cottage, it needs space for either people, luggage/other crap, or both.
AWD/4WD (pretty much the only mandatory thing, I tried to tell him it might not really be necessary, but he said it’s pretty much the only thing the car really needs to have, for just in case scenarios, winter, off roading etc).
It *could* be a pickup, but I think he’s leaning a lot more towards wagons and/or SUVs.
Manual, (it could be an auto, but manual is preferred).
Diesel.
He will be getting pre purchase inspections and whatnot, but it really is up to me for prior research etc.
Also, we’re in Toronto, but depending on the uniqueness, it could be in a different province (he mentioned near an airport, to check it out, but tbh that doesn’t sound like the best idea, IDK), so distance, at least within Ontario isn’t really a big deal.
If anyone would have recommendations or can help me out here it would be greatly appreciated!
“Skyline” funny car for your time.

Is diesel mandatory?
Because a Subbie would fit in there real nice.

No I don’t believe so, he said that there’s probably nothing that get every category, so he wasn’t expecting everything in one, so I don’t think itll be a problem.
What years/models were you thinking?

Any old diesel pickups with 2 rows of seating (never really big on pickups so idk), the extra seating would really be useful, I don’t think he’d get something with only two seats.

Is he cool with a RHD JDM Land Cruiser or something?

If diesel is not a strong requirement, the Suzuki SX4 is a fun, plucky little thing, and well under budget. Had I not bought my Mazda I probably would have bought a blue SX4 Touring that came across my path last week.
Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute.
Ford Super Duty with the Powerstroke.
Mercedes, BMW, and Audi offer AWD vehicles and diesel vehicles, but I'm not sure North America gets a combination vehicle.
