“Y’know, Mike, the hood doesn’t cover the engine enough. We need another cover for good luck.”

Wires. Wires everywhere under that cover.

It’s the lazy way of making an engine bay not look like a total mess.

Nah I got some more covers under there. It’s a fucking Russian nesting doll.

I’d rather have it look like a total mess.

The 80,000 other regular people that buy that car a year would disagree with you, though. ...and they kinda bring the money to the table, not someone buying the car used in ten years.

I’m with you. We’re finally able to get rid of the miles of vacuum hose thanks to electronic controls and then they go and hide the engine. It was the malaise engines that needed the covers.

Simplify and add lightness brah.

It adds horsepower bro.

Sigh, to keep dirt/water out of electrical components. This has been gone over time and time again.

I think I might have one of the newest cars not to come with an engine cover. It does have a cover over the battery for some reason though.

Nope, they don’t do that at all. Just looks and NVH.

Is Audi the only holdout in this price range?

They have a solid point: NVH (noise vibration harshness). Especially on direct inject cars, they cut down the TICK considerably.

The only legit reasons that I can find them defensible is to cover the noise of direct injection (which consumers might think is a bad sound), and to simplify the options for the few consumers that pop the hood and look at what’s under there. Other than that, they just tend to get in the way. Luxury cars tend to be the worst, seemingly being made with the attitude, “There’s nothing to see here! The trunk is in the back. If you have opened this panel, you should probably have the vehicle serviced at the nearest brand dealership."
