After a hiatus of nearly 25 years, Eastern Airlines is back in action. The former giant’s iconic double blue stripe can now be seen gracing the fuselage of The Spirit of Eddie Rickenbacker , a Boeing 737-800, instead of the Lockheed Tristars, Douglas DC-9s, and Boeing 757s of the past.

Once considered one of the “Big 4” U.S. carriers, with destinations around the U.S., Central America, Canada, and the U.K., Eastern fell into financial trouble in the late 1980s, filing for bankruptcy in 1989. In January of 1991, Eastern ceased operations and its routes, intellectual property, and assets were acquired by other carriers.

The new Eastern will begin by running twice daily flights to Havana, Cuba, from Miami and weekly flights to Camaguey, Cuba and Santa Clara, Cuba.

To celebrate Eastern’s return, here are some of its iconic aircraft of the past.

In my intensive studying of © today, I learned that just because an image comes from Wikipedia, you still have to credit the author, just to be official. Here, it probably doesn’t matter much. But since my history post got shared to the FP, I’m being more thorough with my credits.

But yeah, I love that classic livery. It looks sharp on that 757.

I think in this case there’s no need to be anal about it. You’re not making any money off of it.

Shiny Eastern 727’s may be the prettiest airliners ever.
