When I get extremely frustrated with the lack of basic industry knowledge among auto writers:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
It was linked in a FP article, I started commenting but I really don’t have the time right now for the essay it will turn into, so I will be writing a full explanation later tonight once I stop #smdh.
Also if you have any relevant questions you’d like me to address, comment here and I’ll answer them in that later essay.

As I see it, bumpers on modern cars are the beginning of the crumple zone - they’re designed to dissipate energy in an impact and protect the occupants at all costs. To a lesser extent they are designed with pedestrian safety in mind, in case you go all Carmageddon accidentally bump a jaywalker or something.
What they aren’t designed to do is look good after a crash, be reusable, or cheap to repair. I have no numbers to back it up, but I’d think insurance companies would be ok with this in the big picture - They don’t mind spending $3 - 5k to replace the bumper on a car in a lowspeed accident, if it means they don’t need to pay out significantly more than that for medical costs due to occupant injuries. Also, for more serious accidents, to be very blunt, dead people cost insurance companies more than totaled cars.
Seems like a win-win-win. Automakers design bumpers to self-destruct, insurance companies pay out less, and people are less likely to end up seriously injured or worse.
Like a lot of things, it’s grumpy old guy syndrome that’s the biggest problem. HERP DERP DERP I MOWED DOWN A HERD OF DEER, A MAILBOX, AND A TELEPHONE POLE IN MY 73 OLDSMOBILE AND IT DIDN’T EVEN SCRATCH THE BUMPER. THAT’S A GOOD CAR RIGHT THERE.

Aren’t these all examples of the bumper cover working?
Lights and metal all look good, just replace the cheap plastic.

You’re mostly spot-on, but believe it or not, repair cost is a factor :) I’ll remember to expand on that later.

By cheap plastic I take it you mean the mold in color parts, or the painted (likely TPO) fascia?

Yea, whatever the actual term for this is.

I laughed out loud that. Literally, not figuratively.
Yup, with you there. I used to be of that mindset too - buy a 1970s or 1980s luxo-barge with chrome bumpers as a beater. While that may be fine as a boulevard cruiser that never goes over 40km/hr, it’s a deathtrap above that - a completely indestructible iron box that yields for no-one and no-thing, including the meatbags riding in it. Yeah... no.
While it may be inconvenient to have to repair a bumper some asshat decided to roll in to while parallel parking, that’s still more convenient than a hospital stay or death.

Cheap? The bumper cover for my car is $270. Unpainted. Plus there is this gem in the fine print:
Shipping for this item is a fixed $225.00 USD
Painting is another quick $300. Best case you’re looking at $800 unless you want to run around with a mismatched bumper cover, in which case you get off for “only” $495.

LOL @ that shipping price. If you ever need a new bumper, it’d be time to go race car.
But yea, It’d be a lot more if you needed a new hood/light/fender whatever else.

My car comes with enough rice from the factory. I can’t be adding any more to it.
