piston rings are special

they keep everything compressed

they have a special job to do

made unlike all the rest

the keep our intake charge intact

and squish it oh so right

while oil rings keep out the mess

sealed up nice and tight

Piston rings are so much fun,

You gap them with a file.

And if it’s rightly done,

They’ll last you many miles.

They’re not just for compression,

They work the entire Otto.

So please have some compassion,

For stress they see a lot o’.

The suck and squish and bang and blow,

They make it all to happen.

If from the spec one falls below,

Your engine starts to crappin.

So here’s to Top Ring strong and yet so thin,

He keeps the gases in the chamber,

Without Second Ring he could not win,

This mighty task against the vapor.

The Oil Ring keeps the walls so clean,

And scrapes the mess below,

And few of us will ever glean,

His contribution to the flow.

So keep it up you piston rings,

Do keep it under tension,

For you do for us so many things,

And some I haven’t mentioned.
