Is there a technical reason why its oppo dot kinja now, or did Jalopnik and oppo divorce? Sorry if this is explained somewhere else.

This has been discussed to death on a daily basis.

Apparently there were some legal issues with the user run blogs and Gawker decided it was time to distance the main revenue generating blogs from them.

Someone said it was a copyright issue; people were trying to get royalties for Oppo posts since it was “technically” part of Jalopnik and thus Gawker.
That doesn’t quite sound right, but I suppose it could be the reason.

It’s been six years with no sign of serious commitment, so we had to break up.

But google is. And google is a blabbermouth. It’ll tell you whatever you want to know.

I guess I’m just not used to googling answers to very particular questions like this.

Sounds right to me. jalopnik has paid staff and is a for-profit business. They can’t use copyrighted material without paying royalties.
Oppo is nonprofit, the posters here can use copyrighted material more freely, and the worst that can legally happen is you will have to remove it at the request of the copyright holder.
Removing the domain reduces the confusion
