Title says it all. I say the S2k. Looks modern even today, and its engine is pretty cool. What say you?

I agree, AP2’s can pass for almost new and who can hate the reliability of that cool f20c? Killer handling and still go for totally reasonable amounts of money..

Porsche 924S. Lighter than the 944, using the 944’s motor but keeping the much cheaper Audi/VW parts bin interior, it was an honest sports car for the people. Still a little pricey but it was a hidden gem in the lineup. Something similar today using say.....the ubiquitous 2.0T from the VW group would be wonderful for a sub boxster entry level car.

There really do. I’d really like a modern Alfa Spider or MGB that would run properly but then they’d lose some of their character.

Though it was a great car, it probably would be better suited to bring back the 944 name.

Maybe not the best, but it could have become awesome, the Subaru SVX. It never even had the chance to think about evolving, much less get a manual gearbox. But I think that given a second and third generation, it could have been a legendary, all weather grand tourer/sports car.

My dream S2ks were up for sale at one point. A white/tan AP1 with 8,000 miles was for sale a few miles from me. But it was sold really quickly. And then the same combo, but AP2 and 15k miles, popped up for sale and sold equally quickly.

One of the teachers at my elementary school drove a Laguna Blue AP2. (I still think she does) I want it.

I’ve yet to see a tan interior for sale locally.. I always assumed they were really rare. The crazy thing is sometimes you can find low mileage (under 40k) early AP1’s at crazy low prices... saw one with like 23k on it going for $19,999 at a Toyota dealership, too bad it was across the country!

Kinja'd!!! MLGCarGuy > AM3R shamefully returns
05/27/2015 at 21:57

Kinja'd!!!0

Well dealers who don’t really know their stuff can sell it to you for great prices. The people/also stupid dealers mark them up. There’s an AP1 in red/black for $32,400 because the dealer believes a low mileage S2k should sell for sticker.

Perhaps, but I want the idea of the 924S over the 944. Not that the 944 was bad in any way, just that the 924S was a proper “entry level” porsche. FOcus on the engine and dynamics and let the interior be functional over luxurious.

Isn’t the AP1 better since they lowered the redline for AP2? I mean, the high revving nature is the #1 selling point of the car and they get rid of it.

Kinja'd!!! MLGCarGuy > Bytemite
05/28/2015 at 00:45

Kinja'd!!!0

It depends. Each has its pros and cons. The AP1 has a higher redline, which is nice. The AP2 has a larger engine displacement, a more accessible power band, and is more reliable.

Kinja'd!!! Bytemite > MLGCarGuy
05/28/2015 at 01:24

Kinja'd!!!0

A more accessible powerband is taaking away the very trait that makes the s2k exciting and a sports car. If people want an accessible powerband theyd buy a civic.

Kinja'd!!! MegaSuper > Bytemite
05/28/2015 at 01:27

Kinja'd!!!0

I think the S2000 is a solid choice just because it’s so small and yet powerful! Seriously, what other car has that kind of power in such a small package?

Kinja'd!!! Bytemite > MegaSuper
05/28/2015 at 01:32

Kinja'd!!!0

Yep thats why it was so groundbreakingly good. There is no doubt the 240hp with 2800 lb power to weight ratio is a formula for success. There arent any affordable cars with that kind of ratio. But finally the ND miatas 155hp to 2200 lb is going to be just as good. Or youd need to back to the rx7 FD and take the reliability hit.
