Acura has "lost its way" with sedans

Random thoughts while looking at a new midsize sedan:

Acura’s TL, TLX, TSX, ILX...all are a mess style-wise and luxury content-wise. They just can’t get it right. The Acura brand is like the Buick of Japanese cars in the near-luxury sense which keeps me from considering one to replace my 530i (had a couple Accords prior so i’m partial to the brand).

Ok the RLX looks somewhat decent, but why the orange driving lights at the bottom? Reminds me of an early 2000s american car with the yellow daytime running lights.

ILX has predator face:

Great quality and reliability across the brand, though.

My issue is I have no idea which model fits which segment. The naming scheme really isn’t helping them out much.

Well I know “T” means “Touring.” Don’t know what “R” and “I” mean though.

If no one is buying them, there should be an opportunity to score a car on the cheap. Honestly, when people ask me for a car recommendation (happens about once a month) I forget the entire Acura line exists. And Infiniti, but that’s because that brand doesn’t need to exist.

I’m pretty sure the I in ILX was supposed to mean Integra, but it’s yet to live up to that.

They are soooo lost. It’s amazing what that company has done to itself in just 10 years time.

Agreed. The SUVs are in a sweet spot. Specifically the MDX here in Washington Heights Manhattan

When you look at them in person, they don’t look half bad. Especially the back. However, they are really slacking in the luxury car market. I agree, they’re down there with Buick and Chrysler. Really sad when you consider they used to make amazing cars, like the Legend, Integra, and the 3.2CL Type-S.

I might know the solution to all of their problems.

Chrysler is worse. They have...wait for it....THREE(!) vehicles available in their product portfolio.

But if it wasn’t weird looking it would do even better. It’s a great SUV under that ugly grille and those goofy headlights.

They never lost their way, because they were never on their way. The Legend and the NSX are the only two things that have come out of them.

As an Acura dealership tech, save your money, don’t buy any of the new models, and get yourself a first gen TSX. It’s the most bullet-proof car they made. We have one as a runner’s car with almost 300k, and still going strong.

They lost it when they switched from the old round TL to the spaceship / angled / pointy nosed design disaster that replaced it.

The MDX is the best thing they have in their line up. At the autoshow I sat in the TLX and while it wasn’t bad it wasn’t all that great either and I much prefer the look of the older gen TL’s inside and out.

Also nice to see another NY’er on here, I’m on the other side of the bridge in the Bronx.

I’d own an MKZ before a TSX/TL/TLX. Actually I’d take any Lincoln before any current Acura.

ILX = Civic (compact)

TSX/TL/TLX = Accord (midsize)

RDX = CR-V (smallish/midsize crossover)

MDX = Pilot (midsize/almost large crossover)

RLX = ??? it replaced the RL which was a full size and had no Honda equivalent, but seems to be a bigger Accord V6 now.

The TLX/TL is notable for offering AWD (SH-AWD in Honda-speak) where the Accord does not.
