Fuel is too cheap, and that’s why you can’t have nice things.

Kinja'd!!!

According to Mazda’s Robert Davis, the capacity of the Mexican plant in Salamanca is too small to supply the US market as well, and there’s also the lack of demand because everyone wants the biggest truck because fuel prices will never, ever go back up and climate change isn’t happening.

Sorry, where was I? Oh yes: Mazda. Mr Davis’ reasoning doesn’t quite add up, methinks, but the result is the same: no bundle of cheap fun for you. According to European tests, the Mazda 2 is the one supermini that gives a Fiesta a run for its money in the driving fun stakes, whilst being a bit more grown up and long distance comfy as well. And very considerably nicer looking, IMHO.

Not to worry, though: the US will still get the version that’s been beaten up with the ugly stick so bad that it’s been left for dead in the ditch: the Scion iA.

Sorry, couldn’t resist showing it next to the Mazda 2. I’m a bad person.

This is why we can’t have nice things... This would be the econobox I’d have.

To be fair, the old one was a nice looking little hoon mobile too, and now it won’t look out of date so much #silverlining

It’s been tested and rated for the US market, so the moment people discover that that F150 wasn’t such a great idea for the commute, Mazda just needs to flip the switch. Coming in 3, 2, 1...

Yes, that seems to be Toyota Motor Corp’s favourite synonym for “f-ing ugly”

Yeah I agree entirely. It’s a cheap car that doesn’t look like a dishwasher, I actually liked the style.

And because Mazda is essentially a niche brand here that’s still struggling to find sustainable volume, and the previous 2 sold in such small numbers that its doubtful they ever made money on it. I still don’t get what it would really cost them, aside from transportation costs that they could push onto consumers, to sell it here, since they’ve already paid to certify it for FMVSS.

I suppose they’re operating under the idea that, at such small volumes, it’s just more profitable to push potential 2 customers into 3s instead.

Coming from Europe, it’s hard to imagine customers going into a dealer for a 2 and coming out with a 3; it’s nearly always the other way round here, which is why superminis are getting fancier by the year. But the US is clearly very different in that regard.

My darker guess as to why Mazda isn’t selling the 2, is because they made a deal with Toyota to not compete with the Scion iA...

There might be something to that. Doesn’t have to be sinister - they might have run the numbers, found out there wasn’t room for both of them, and determined that the iA would sell in larger numbers/for higher margins. Doesn’t seem very likely, since Scion isn’t exactly a volume brand and they don’t really make much money for Toyota, but maybe.

It could also be that Toyota is just paying Mazda through the nose for iAs to the point where they just can’t lose.

I can't believe they're not bringing it here, especially considering how well the 3, 6, and CX-5 have done with their redesigns/introductions.

I was hoping the Mazda 2 sedan would come to the U.S. I love the styling! Oh well I can’t afford a new car anyway. I am hoping it still comes to the U.S. maybe just a little late.
