FINALLY!! After an entire year, we finally have had the source of the problem discovered by the shop. And seriously, it’s not what you’d think the problem would have been. No one could have guessed it, the forum couldn’t figure it out either. It hurts my head to fathom the massive reality of the matter..

Are ya ready for what it was?? Get ready! It was........

A bad electrical contact.

Kinja'd!!!

(Pic of fuse box from last summer)

Yep!! it was a bad electrical contact. the fuses for the fuse box were corroded after 40 years, and they weren’t giving power to the main box, the CDI box that essentially controls the ignition. When I had checked the CDI box for voltage and resistance, I got 0v and 0 ohms from it, but never bothered to check if it was related to any fuses...I checked the ignition, the fuel injectors, changed the spark plugs, and never would have guessed this was the problem.

Its kinda ironic. The first thing I fixed on my 944 were some blown fuses, of course fuses would be the cause of the problems on our 911.

But that’s not all! There’s also a fuel leak on top of the motor, and also, the fuel injectors have wrong seals on them by the last shop, so we’re getting new seals put on the injectors tomorrow! An oil change will be done as well.

Finally, one of the calipers is locked up which explains the lackluster braking from last year, but it probably needs pads and rotors all around, so there’s that. I’ll be tackling the pads on the 944 sooner or later as well. Once the car is safe to test drive, then we’ll know if there’s anything else that needs to be done.

All in all, kinda dumbfounded, but happy that some REAL progress has been made. :)

Oh, and I’ll be fixing that damn taillight.

Be sure to change fuel filters once you get her running.

Nice. I ended up buying a pack of 10 for my car. Much easier and usually the first thing I do if the car feels off.

I suppose putting the motor at the back does help insure you’re not stranded after colliding with a shed.

Strangely enough, I messed around with the old one, and it wasn’t even gummed up or messed up in anyway. I shot some water in with a hose on high pressure, and it came out just as clean at the other end.

Come to Cantech just make the trip it’ll be a fun father son thing, baby we’ll treat you right. Both the Porsche’s. We’re Porsche specialists with certified mechanics (the owner started as a specialist/ enthusiast with a 997 GT2) and we love to chat. Promise I’ll stop mentioning it now.

Well, Porsche cars and Porsche tanks are both flammable.

Kinja'd!!!

Though with a tank, you hit a tree with the front.

Kinja'd!!!

And with the Porsche, you hit the tree with the back.

The unwritten rule: if it ain’t easy to find or diagnose, it’s electrical.

You probably wouldn’t want a Porsche designed tank...

I dunno, dumb simple electrical shit that is the last place you look is exactly what I would have guessed was the problem. Glad to hear you got it figured out!

First thing I do with an old car is get a new upgraded fuse box and new fuses. The Z is going to get a rally/aircraft style resettable fuse bank. If I have the old box I sand the contacts aND put dialectical grease on everything. Electrical sucks to have issues.

Well, there’s a problem, and it’s that you can only see that logic after you’ve exhausted your other options, so it’s really not that predictive, just prescriptive.

Look, a Porsche-designed tank.

Kinja'd!!!

The Elefant ( German for “elephant”) was a Schwerer Panzerjäger (German: “heavy tank-hunter”)—a tank destroyer —of the German Wehrmacht during World War II. It was built in small numbers in 1943 under the name Ferdinand after its designer Ferdinand Porsche , using tank hulls that had been produced for a cancelled German heavy tank design.

The main problems were that off-road it got 0.26 MPG (909L/100KM) at a top speed of 6.2MPH (10KM/H). Also, the tracks needed frequent maintenance, it was unreliable, it didn’t have much for secondary armament, and it was so damn heavy ( 70 GODDAMN TONS , the fucking M1A1 Abrams tank is only 63 tons) it would not only get stuck easily, but that it took FIVE Bergepanzer IV armored recovery vehicles to tow its fat ass out when it got stuck or disabled.

Despite this, it averaged 10 tank kills for every one that was lost. At the Battle of Kursk, 89 of them were deployed (only 91 were made total). They took out 320 enemy tanks, at a loss of 13 Ferdinands. Most of the losses weren’t due to combat, but from the crews having to destroy them to avoid capture after they broke down or got stuck.
