Kinja'd!!!

As graduation is approaching, I’m struck with a decision for my graduation gift. 2015 WRX or BRZ?

NOW, before you all exclaim in disgust and call me a spoiled brat, chill . I’m not the type to use “My dad will sue you” as a comeback, and I don’t wear salmon colored shorts. I prefer to work for my own things, but my parents are just feeling proud enough to buy me a new car, and I wouldn’t say no.

I am simply wondering, from gearhead to gearhead, what do you prefer to own and why? I am leaning toward the WRX due to the practicality and the understated, Corolla-esque looks . But, every time I see a BRZ I’m reminded about how fun the car is, and the fact that it doesn’t look like its formed from melted lego blocks.

This will be my fourth car and I’ve been driving for over 2 years. Which will the transition from my car to the next will be the most interesting? I currently drive a 1995 Toyota Celica GT pictured below.

No Genesis 2.0T?

I would do the WRX, as it has more space, more power, and AWD.

They discontinued the 2.0T :(
Just the 3.6 now.

I’ve not driven the WRX however I own a BRZ and love it, it’s my daily driver, if I had a bad day at work then I just find a twisty bit of road, put my foot down and have some fun and I’m instantly in a better mood

You can probably do similar with the WRX however with the BRZ not being as quick you can get to its limits easier and more within the laws

Finally, RWD = more skids

WRX. More power, more practical (meaning you can keep it longer and save money in the long run), just as fun in a different way. It’s also a very fun and capable car, just not a very slidey one.

If you are buying the car, the WRX will better on paper. It will have better resale value, and will be more likely to be practical for longer.

But it kinda depends on what you want out of the car.

Well, I’m nearly twice your age so take this as you will...I love the BRZ and what it represents but no small coupe could be my only car. If that was the case for me, the WRX would win by default.

What sort of driving roads do you have, mountains with lots of curves or a lot of flat and straight ones? The BRZ will be heaps of fun in the twisties, the WRX makes a way better highway cruiser.

Full disclosure: I have a WRX.

Practicality is not a necessity, but it would be nice.
But in terms of resale value, I feel like the BRZ could hold up just as well

I don’t get this thing nowadays with college students wanting a practical car. You’re young and don’t have any furniture or children to cart around, save practical car time for when you do. Because when/if that time comes, you may not be able to own an impractical car for quite a while.

GTI.

It’s engine is a bazillion times better than the BRZ (same HP, much more torque), and it’s more practical as well. The interior blows any Subaru out of the water, and it will go just fine in the snow with winter tires if you need it.

You lucky bastard. All I get for graduation is $1000 from my mom to try and help me pay for college after my dad spent my $20k college fund on his then-mistress/now-wife.

Jealousy aside, I’d go with the WRX. It’s just a better car in my opinion. Just promise that you’ll keep it stock/mostly stock.

I find the WRX power hard to pass up, but I think the BRZ would be more fun more of the time. Depends what matters to you, eg overall performance, practicality, resale, MPG...

The fact that the BRZ just got a (modest) power boost makes me lean that way.

you could probably earn some points and ask then to get you a used STi. If your going for practicality you cant beat the hatchback which is no longer available. The older Sti got the 6 speed while the WRX had the 5 speed but it also has more power and the controllable center dif. The BRZ will probably be more fun because of the RWD. your going to have a hard time getting sideways in the WRX not that thats what you’ll do every morning but the WRX is damn hard to brake loose. I’m actually amazing at how well the WRX holds the road.

When I graduated from school, I had literally the same debate last summer. Solution : base it on where I get a job. Anywhere above the Mason Dixon = snow, so WRX. Else, BRZ.

Moved to NJ and got the Rex.

Every now and again, I get a pang in my stomach that the Toyobaru would have been a little more fun, but the fact that I can carry all types of crap (like friends) makes it seem like a decent overall choice.

If I had to choose again, I’d still do the WRX, except that I would get red instead of white, because everyone has white.

Haha, you’re nuts. The WRX holds its value better than anything outside of Jeeps and limited investment cars. FRS/BRZ are looking at having Miata-like curves (normal depreciation then bottoming around 3k). WRX slaughters it resale-wise.

That said, I’d take a BRZ. Having owned powerful cars and lightweight cars I’ve found that less weight=fun always. More power=fun sometimes. Always > sometimes. Can’t really go wrong with either though.

Anyway, Im leaning with the BRZ, SImply because of the options that are out there and How neat they are. But With the cash, You could just go for the WRX, If you can handle the radio quirks.

Congrats on graduation!

Also, While your at it, get Unequal Length headers to return the car to their roots.

First, congrats on graduating! That’s a big deal. My parents were just as proud, but wouldn’t buy me the car I was lusting after. Why not give a new grad a Ferrari?

I’d go with the WRX. It’s much easier to live with. The BRZ gets kinda old when you need to move big items or when you take more than one person with you somewhere. There’s a lot you can do with the WRX to make it more distinct and sleeker/sporty. While the BRZ has the looks, the WRX has the speed and sensibility of a car that will last you a while.

If you’re going to mod it, BRZ, if not Wrx. One thing you should know about the most recent wrx is that the throttle response is over kill. Its going to take you a solid week of driving to learn to pull away smoothly. They apparently did this to make test drives more lively, and Ive even heard a rumor that it delivers full power at 50 to 60% throttle. That being said, the grip is fantastic, and is tons of fun to drive.

Personally, if I were to get a RWD car, it would have to have more power than a BRZ. It’s a great little car, but it lacks power and provides zero practicality. The WRX with its AWD, stout stock power output, and sedan for better seating friends and/or loading camping equipment would be my choice. I would also consider a GTI. It’s a very attractive hot-hatch, and again provides more practical needs than a BRZ.

Don’t pay attention to anyone talking about snow. Had my FR-S on snow tires this past Detroit winter and it was excellent.

It’s harder to do tail-sliding shenanigans in an AWD car. If you’re going for outright speed then go WRX. If you want to have all the fun, go BRZ.

You don’t need to spring for either of those just yet, but rather take a broad look at the possibilities of the “buyers” market when it comes to luxury class vehicles. Nothing wrong with looking into cars that others so easily write-off due to those stories of “naval ship maintenance costs, jet fuel requirements, pending bankruptcy..etc, etc..” Those that you hear preaching this usually have had either a) friends that thought car ownership was a utopian one-time cost that offered social prowess in whichever Starbucks parking lot they pulled into; b) the people that subsequently purchased those cars without ever actually opening the hood and figuring out that it doesn’t cost that much to actually repair it. I bought an SLK right out of college as my first car when I landed my first job, and its been an amazing experience. I live in southwestern PA so of course it snows like a mother****er, and I remember one of the stupid sales associates stereo-typically commenting on “rear-wheel drive in the snow prejudice “ but who cares. Its really not that big of a deal. I only have two seats and a trunk. Is it annoying sometimes? Yes. Does it really matter? Well, when you pull the top back and blow past everyone in a car that was inspired with F1 design, quite simply, no.

Go out, buy something in your price range that makes you say, “ I love driving this, every minute I’m in it.” Remember to consider that you are young, and that you have an entire life ahead of you with dull cars and “practicality” in its description. Look around you, and realize that cars are items that are best enjoyed in the moment, and it’s in your hands to take that moment and make the most of it. Life is too short to drive boring cars, so take advantage of this moment when the responsibilities of the world are still catching up to you. Jump in your seat and drive, dont look back, and dont question the logistics of the road. See what emotions are racing through you. When you find the car that whisks away the feeling of worry and responsibility, even for the short drive you may embark on, you will know it’s the right one. As car guys, the moments we live for are the ones in which our hearts beat for the light that we embraced from our very youth, the light that reflected off of the most beautiful machinery that we found to be laying our eyes on. Don’t ever let yourself fall away from the dreams of the emotions you set out to grasp. Cars are in our blood, and the opportunity to enjoy them diminish every year that our responsibilities grow. I have my SLK equipped with a 6 speed, and let me tell you, every moment I spend in it is like euphoria. Go out, drive a bunch of things you would never consider, and remember, don’t limit yourself to what is logical, rational, or expected. Go after the feeling that powers the emotion that made you love cars in the first place. Don’t listen to practicality, charge after passion, emotion, and the pure bliss that you deserve when you get behind the wheel in this crazy, crazy world.
