Had beautiful weather for the second event of the year with the Cincy region SCCA. This event was on the beautifully smooth and grippy concrete of Wilmington Airport. This was my third time racing the MR2 and I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. I’ve been trying to focus on improving the nut behind the wheel before sinking more money into the car, but it’s becoming more apparent that the current suspension setup needs work.

The problem is that the car has a strut-style suspension and is currently on fairly soft Eibach progressive lowering springs and stock/original/unknown struts and stock sway bars. The problem is that the softish setup leads to really huge body roll and suspension deflection so the geometry gets out of wack really quickly. The result is very peaky behavior that requires the driver to be super smooth and even then it’s terrible in fast transitions which are key in autocross.

Even with the car as-is, it’s still stupid fun to drive and makes a great noise. Everyone always loves seeing the MR2 out there in the sea of miatas

Rear sways make the body roll a bit more progressive. Rather than gripping like crazy until there’s no grip, it gives you more notice before snapping, and lets you fling the back a bit more than without. I got the ST ones from TwosRUs, and was thinking about getting a front one later, but I’m happy with the stock fronts now. Controlling the rear roll makes it much easier to keep it settled on fast transitions.

Mine is an 85 so it has a stock rear sway bar, but it’s really tiny so I might take your advice and pick up the ST bars. I also have a set of Koni’s sitting in my garage so I think that will help too.

Eventually I’ll get around to getting the GC coilover sleeves and camber plates. I might try out the no-swaybar setup that Steve Hoelscher aka Xhead on mr2oc runs. He explains it really well in the AutoX section of the forum and he’s won a couple championships with his DP AW11

Mine’s pretty good with the stock strut housings with konis in it. At this point, I don’t think that there’s anything to be gained in the corners apart from more tire, but I might reevaluate it at that point.

Still looks pretty darn neutral (and a lot of fun) with a mostly stock suspension. I want an MR2 now. More so. Return with another video with a swaybar and maybe some Koni’s! Please?

I just look at the tape like yeah my GSX’s stock suspension would not be able to pull the nose in fast enough on those hard transitions to counteract physics/ understeer/ the whole engine being ahead of the front axle, so far as I remember. Haven’t autox’d with all the new stuff. I need hoosiers, bro.

Are you running the GC’s?

No, I just have Koni yellows in the stock housing with the eibachs.
