Woow. That must be one of the worst names for a car I have ever come across.

Meh.

When will auto manufacturers learn that putting touch screens in a car (or at least within range the front seats) is a bad idea?

Does it do the dashboard swipe every time start stop engages?! That would drive me mad!

They won’t, because it’s not. As long it’s done intelligently, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with touch-screen based infotainment centers.

What matters is that they have a proper split between redundant physical controls for things like HVAC, seat controls, etc that are better left to physical buttons and knobs and the controls for things like entertainment (bluetooth streaming, phone pairing, radio, etc) for the touchscreen.

It’s basically our TLX.

I’m fine with having redundant physical controls, but if you are having physical controls, why do you need a touch screen? I can see for running things like an infotainment system. The problem is that so few seem to actually implement it intelligently.

but if you are having physical controls, why do you need a touch screen?

So you can have one area of the center console perform multiple control inputs.

Good point. Touch screens do also have the advantage that they take less space than a same sized screen and physical controls.

How many touch screens allow use with gloves on? Something to think about when up here in Canada. Unless you like running you car for half an hour before you get in it, there’s a pretty good chance you’ll be wearing gloves inside it, at least for a little bit.

I can’t imagine cost being a huge reason for/against touch screens. I’m just not a huge fan of something that requires the driver to take his/her eyes of the road in order to use it. If it can be designed with that in mind, I’d be okay with that, but almost every example I’ve seen shows the driver looking over at the screen in order to make adjustments.

Almost everything requires you to take your eyes off the road, it just depends for how long. Yes, having a dial to adjust the climate control builds muscle memory, but you still need to look at the temp gauge as you turn the dial. That’s taking your eyes off the road.

And there’s plenty of tech out there to allow the use of gloves on touchscreens, it’s just a matter of auto companies utilizing. They could go the eReader route that the Nook and Kindle take that utilize a thin strip of infrared sensors along the edge of the screen to detect when something breaks the barrier. They also have super-sensitive capacitive touchscreens that are capable of completing the circuit with your finger, even through gloves.

My smartphone has such an option that I can turn on and off, and as long as you aren’t using big thick snow shoveling gloves (or mittens) it works fine.

Let me guess, you’ve got a Nokia? (I’ve got a Lumia 920, and it has that option).

As for adjusting temperature, I’ve not found that to be an issue. From memory, I know that clicking the dial clockwise makes it hotter, and counter-clockwise makes it cooler. Usually when I’m adjusting the temperature, it still doesn’t require taking my eyes off the road. Same with adjusting the fan speed/settings. Click it all the way clockwise, that’s defrost. All the way counter-clockwise, then back one click, and that’s air on the head and feet. I suppose there might be muscle memory involved on touch screen controls, but that’s provided that the controls are large enough and consistently placed.

For the amount that manufacturers are pushing these things, you’d think there’d be a little more R&D put into them. Take, for example the Ford MyTouch system. I’ve yet to hear a single good thing about it. I’ve heard similar things about the system in the Fiat 500L. If it is so easy to get it right, then why aren’t there more people out there singing praises about such systems?

Don’t get me wrong - I’m certainly not against change. However, I am against change for the worse, and until manufacturers start getting things right before shoving them out to market, I’m very hesitant to buy into it.

Yup, Lumia 1520, and before that, a reliable 920.

And I have a dual-zone climate control system in my car, so when I adjust the temperature, it does so by single degrees. Yes, twisting it to the left makes it cooler and to the right makes it hotter, but unless I want to set it on 80, I generally have to look at the digital read-out to see what temp I just set.

Ah. I don’t have something quite like that - just a knob with some colored strips on it.
