Thought you people might appreciate my composition:
I absolutely hate this car. It just won’t die. So I’m giving up. I’m selling the car and getting something else.
Who should buy this car: someone who wants reliable transportation that’s cheap to maintain. The damn thing is bulletproof (not literally, but it did go through a hail storm, and didn’t get a single freaking dent. I was really hoping it would be a write off), and parts for these things are cheap. I just put new tires on it, because it wouldn’t die and it really needed them.
Who should not buy this car:
Anyone who appreciates fine German automobiles. People who want their cars to make a statement about them. People who want to go really fast around corners.
What it has had in terms of maintenance: regular oil changes (I hate the car, but I’m not a monster), coolant replaced like once, new front shocks and sway bar, new battery. It has a timing chain, which you can technically replace if you want to, but a) it’s a chain, not a belt and b) replacing the whole damn engine takes about as much effort and expense (they go for about $500 on craigslist) as replacing the chain, so you might as well just run it till it dies.
Never been in an accident, my wife and I are the second owners. I do like to go fast around corners, do appreciate fine German automobiles, and like my car to say something about me. The last two cars I bought for myself my wife has wound up driving.
What it needs: Rears driver’s side window motor mechanism broke. You will probably want to get it fixed. I don’t. The windshield has a crack in it. You may want to get that replaced at some point. I don’t. It’s ready for it’s next oil change. The little V-6 is so under-tuned that you could probably drive it 50000 miles between oil changes, but you may want to get it changed more often than that. Our last change was before winter last year. It’s still full, and the oil is in good shape, so nothing’s going to blow up if you keep driving it like it is, but I’m hoping you will love this car in a way that I never will, and will change the oil every 4500 miles or so (3000 is going to be way overkill, 4500 is manufacturer recommended).
I’m asking $3000, but would like to sell it in the next couple of weeks, so if you low ball me, and your offer is the best in those couple of weeks, you may very well get the car.
UPDATE: Switched to a more conventional format:
Selling a mechanically sound 2004 Pontiac Grand Am.
Power windows and locks (I have both fobs), automatic lights, CD/FM tuner (the radio display backlight does not work, but the presets all do), fog lights, automatic transmisson, 3.4 liter V-6.
The alignment is good. The brakes are good (tracks straight when stopping hard), as are C/V joints and transmission.
Mileage varies quite a bit depending on driving conditions. I get 21 mpg commuting from a cold start during the winter, but 35 mpg at 75 mph on road trips (a/c on).

As someone who tried this before, the self deprecating ad on CL was not successful for me and I don’t recommend it. Be honest but not... bitter.

Yeah, I’ll probably go with something more conventional eventually. But I actually got a nibble off it, and that was even before I had cleaned the damn thing. It now looks way better than it’s looked in...months at least.
The car is mechanically in pretty good shape. Brakes, alignment, oil, transmission and engine are all pretty good, which is not true of all of these cars. People who drive them don’t tend to be the type who are used to doing preventative maintenance.

We’ll see. It’s in good driving shape. I’m frankly not set on $3000, I just figured it was a place to start. Setting it at $2000 opens the door to some idiot saying “I’ll give you $500 bucks.”
