We led a mutiny and were granted emancipation. It was pretty badass.

People plagiarized, used copyrighted pictures without licensing, and even asked for press cars posing as official Jalopnik writers.

wow really

Oppo probably got too weird for the Jalopnik’s brass. Never too weird for Orlove but I think Ballaban might of had a problem with us.
Also the use of this gif often upsets certain writers....

Also, all user-generated-content subblogs have been spun off from their respective headline sites. See Observation Deck (io9), TAY (Kotaku), and the like. This was a Gawker-wide policy, although the Jalopnik crew had some specific concerns/grievances.

I think it was happening in the other sub-blogs, too. With the site name in the URL, they were getting a lot of complaints about the use of copyrighted material.

Jalopnik realized that Oppo had become too popular and had to move us back underground.

Nope. We’re free! Freedom! It happened last week.
![]() 05/25/2015 at 11:28 |

Yep. Then, people tried to blame Gawker. While I liked being a subdomain of Jalopnik, it make sense from a liability perspective. The picture thing is so easy to screw up. The other two problems are inexcusable.

The big question is, will it ultimately matter?
![]() 05/25/2015 at 11:31 |

So we don’t need Jalopnik anymore,
![]() 05/25/2015 at 11:31 |

we want to be freed from Kinja, not Jalopnik

who shot who in the what now

It will matter for Oppo. Jalopnik was a big reason for why Oppo is what it is. Oppo will move in its own direction now, whether that’s for better or worse.
![]() 05/25/2015 at 11:33 |

That is true, but we have become one with Kinja and it has accepted us as its own.

I’m new to Oppo, and I never liked Jalo. Or much of what else Gawker offers. It’s too raw and vulgar and rude for my liking.
I’d like to see Oppo writers be able to create their own profile pages, sort of like Facebook, but on Oppo.
My theory is that Oppositelock will get the boot even from Kinja, ultimately.

I mainly read Tavarish and Doug Demuro on Jalopnik. When it comes to cars, I like my journalism to be raw and opinionated.
The format of Oppo won’t change. That’s just not how this works. You do have your own profile though.
Instead of getting the boot, I think that Oppo has the opportunity for major growth with its own identity.

I would put forth that raw and opinionated does not have to be vulgar, rude or crude. Heavy use of f#%$s and S#|+s as intensifiers does not make a piece more compelling.
Regarding growth: the mods are all volunteers. There must be some cost(s) associated with Oppo’s occupancy of space on Kinja. Perhaps rather than Oppo being a side bar link on Jalo, there should be a side bar on Oppo with a link back to Jalo.

Does this mean I don’t have to bother getting authorship at the CigarLounge anymore?
