PORSHCE sounds like a yiddish word.

I’m guessing Yid isn’t a racial slur in your part of the world.

???

“Yid” may well be used as a slur, but Yiddish isn’t.

Oy vey.

Yiddish is a language. Yid is a slur. Hebrew is a language; Hebe is a slur.

See the difference?

Both are according to the email I was sent by the Soccer/Football team I support. Our rivals have strong Jewish heritage and we were warned against making certain chants which was odd since the whole game our rivals were chanting “Yid Army”.

Yiddish was included in banned words supplied by the Soccer/football team I support before a match against our rivals who have strong Jewish heritage. The weird thing is they spent most of the game chanting “Yid Army”.

So what do you call the language, then? It’s not Hebrew, it’s not German, it’s Yiddish . It doesn’t have another name.

No idea. Yid is the same as Slope to me. A word that I was told was racist and just went with it. I’m not gonna start chanting Yiddish Scum but it is always good to have ignorances cleared up.

“Jap” is also a derogatory term, but talking about the Japanese language isn’t offensive. Words like spiel, glitch, mazel tov, chutzpah, tchotchke, putz, and klutz are all Yiddish words or are at least of Yiddish origin.

Is it? Huh, I essentially making the same mistake here by trusting someone else that a certain word is racist but I’d rather be corrected than racist.

Often when speaking negatively about other races, people will shorten the proper term. Many slurs are just variations of the proper terms. “I’m not driving that Jap crap”, “Those damn Japs”, “That damn Jew”, “Those Yids”, Chink, Yank, Heeb, Injun, Kraut, Nip, etc. “Nigger” is just a variation of “negro”, which was once the proper term for a black person (negro means black in Spanish). Now, even negro is no longer acceptable.

Basically, any time you modify or shorten the proper term for an ethnicity, you can bet it can and will be used negatively.

Where do you live out of curiosity? Learning about Racism outside the UK is a lot more interesting than it should be and I would like some Context.

“A word that I was told was racist and just went with it” should be right up there with “here’s why that’s a problem” for our generation’s motto. Never had any real problems so we have to keep inventing them.

So your team thinks Yiddish is a slur? That’s seriously strange.

After some discussions and thought, I reckon it is probably a context thing. For example don’t chant “Yiddish scum”.

Kinja'd!!! samssun > djmt1

Kinja'd!!!0

It’s more that we’ve made a competitive sport of coming up with countless new ways to be offended, and have trained ourselves to just add everything to the taboo list instead of thinking critically.

Now that’s very true :)

But I can’t think of any context where “Yid” wouldn’t be at least perjorative and probably a slur...
