What car do you immediately think when you think about the JDM?
I think of the S15 Silvia.
The way I see it, JDM culture revolves around drifting, and the S15 is arguably the king of that scene. Another thing I think about is a car we, in the US, only see in pictures or video games, but never in real life. The S15 is also that.

R34 GTR for a proper answer.
But I have a debatable answer, the Camry. Since it’s made in Japan and I’m sure it has a bigger presence than anything else you people will write on here.

Actually the Camry is number 9 on the most American built car on sale right now, IIRC. So it’s higher than most “American” cars.

Nissan Skyline R34 GTR.
Japan is known for affordable cars that can taken on challengers typically assumed to be above their punching weight that are rarely ever bespoke. The GTR is built upon the quasi luxury Skyline platform, the STI, an Impreza, and the Evolution, a Lancer. These are laptops on wheels. But there is none more iconic than an R34 in Bayside Blue. There is no car that is more coveted by enthusiasts, either.

Pretty much. Especially since pretty much every time a kei car is offered outside of Japan, it’s either got a larger engine stuffed under the hood, the body is stretched outside kei regulations, or both.

To me, Japan is a quintessentially quirky country, even more so than France perhaps. Inherently progressive yet very conservative at the same time, with just the right amount of tentacle porn. So the essential japanese car has to be progressive, advanced but also conservative, almost boring even and properly weird at the same time.
Enter the Toyota Sera.
It is a very unique and futurisic piece of design thanks to the McLaren F1-esque doors and the extraordinary amount of glass. You could even get it with a banging Super Live Surround Sound system and a pefume dispenser. But peel away that glorious body and the perfume dispensers and you’ll find that it is nothing more than a sleep-inducing Tercel underneath.
