Why Do Old Folks Get Upset About the New Dodge Dart?

Something I don’t think I’ll ever understand is when older people get all up in arms that the new Dodge Dart shouldn’t be called a Dart because it supposedly doesn’t “deserve” the name because of the old one.

This confuses the hell out of me because back in the sixties and seventies, the Dart was Dodge’s compact offering, that was offered with some pretty hot motors in the higher trims. Lower ones, however, were pretty damn boring.

Fast-forward to 2013, and Dodge has released their new compact offering, the Dart. While they’ve yet to make a truly hot SRT variant(300hp and AWD, please!), it’s lower-spec trims are pretty damn boring, just like the old one.

What these old dudes fail to realize is that the current Dart is serving the same role as their beloved old Dart, just 50 years later.

It’s not so much upset it’s more so the older Darts are just cooler. Same old “they don’t build them like they used to” argument.

I can’t help but agree. I’ll take my 65 any day over that Italian POS. (I’d actually take the old car over the new but I don’t discriminate against imported vehicles, I’m just filling the roll of curmudgeon.)

Probably just the white car messing up exposure levels.

It may have something to do with an overworked mechanic named Tony. Also, VEE-ATE!

Are the Darts Italian. My Abarth has an American made engine and was assembled in Mexico at a Chrysler plant.

That’s just noise, and IMHO not a particuarly good noise. Listen to a V8 Dart or even a slant 6 with no fancy exaust.

I don’t care enough to look up where the engines are made but the dart is loosley based on an Alfa platform. Like I said in parenthesis I don’t actually think it’s a POS or that it’s full on Italian or anything, it’s just a thing some die hard America fans say when number 3 was bought out by europeans. I actually do like the new Dart but my heart is with the Fratzog.

It’s funny, because the Dart is actually one of the remain American cars made in America. (Illinois, to be specific)

RWD doesn’t do much when the engine has 100hp and the car weighs in at nearly 3000 pounds.

As a FIAT owner, I assume the darts are also POSs. I own cars from Japan, Germany, the U.S., and this FIAT, and the FIAT is tied with my American car as most cheaply built. My American car is 52 years old though

Pretty sure I’m qualified to chime in on this since I own both. I like my 70 Dart, it’s in pieces but should be a fun car. My 2014 dart gt is actually great. Sporty handling and tons of features for the price. Cars are different now and ai think the name “Dart” was a great way to reintroduce Dodge with its new FIAT ownership and remind buyers that they don’t forget where they came from.

170hp and no driveshaft are pretty good reasons. It’s not unattractive...they should’ve made it the new Avenger

Far as I can recall there was a bigger fuss when the Charger nameplate was revived in the 2000’s. Arguably their most iconic coupe of the muscle car era being revived as a large sedan? Didn’t go down too well, at least initially.
