The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! E70 is both faster and more fuel efficient than the N/A gas I6. Presumably, it’s also more reliable. With diesel and gas prices very close together where we are, is there any reason to pick the gas-powered car over the diseasel?

Gas cars sound better.

Not a huge fan of the green color though.

Gas is cheaper?

1. While a good sound would be nice, in this case it sits rather far down on the list of priorities.

2. It probably won’t be this one, but if it is, the color is better in person. At least it’s not silver or beige.

Gas is much cheaper in most states, so the fuel economy is offset by the fuel cost. In Indiana, the diesel would have to get nearly double the gas MPG’s to even match it in fuel costs.

Not much. Especially when you consider that the gas car gets 15/21 and this gets 19/26.

As Rolland and Stoner said though, gas is usually cheaper than diesel so you probably wouldn’t be saving as much money as you intended to originally.

At our gas stations they’re the same price , more or less.

1. Sound is not a priority.

2. Having driven it, there’s nothing even remotely shitty about this eurodiesel. It’s like a good gas engine, only with more low-end toque. It’s not some rough-idling smoke-belching locomotive like oh, I don’t know, an American diesel.

Hey, if I were going to get a diesel, I’d get a GOOD one, an ‘81 Eldorado Diesel.

(Shut up, if jkm can do it, I can too.)

........wut? In my area diesel is cheaper than premium. Hell it’s cheaper than midgrade. It’s 10 cents more than regular. - http://www.michigangasprices.com/Mobil_Gas_Stat…

And a cursory look of indiana shows the same. Did you even look at diesel prices? http://www.indianagasprices.com/index.aspx?fue…

BMW diesels are not more reliable than their I6 counterparts. Their emissions equipment causes lots of problems. I had a 335d and it was terribly unreliable. Also, the new four banger turbos get almost the same gas mileage with about the same power.

Allroad with 2.7T engine and manuel! Replace airbag suspension with coilovers. Boost all the things! ECU! Upgrade to intercoolers from an RS4. Bigger injectors! APR programming! Install the unobtanium rear-facing cargo-area seats available on the A6 based on the same platform. Obnoxious fast sleeper that seats 7! Legally! Google it. All these mods exist and can be done.

A UK-coworker with a diesel X5 just had the turbo blow. He’s driven the piss out of the thing so it was bound to happen, but he’s had a lot of little weird maintenance things, like having to replace the ebrake twice in 2 years in order to meet the annual UK MOT inspections. It may have something to do with crappy design, or design that had to be adapted because the steering wheel is on the wrong side. You can always biodiesel the diesel for super cheap fuel. Outside of populated areas (truck stops) diesel is closer to parity with petrol. In the EU it’s the opposite, to the tune of €.30/litre.

With any luxury car of a certain era, German, British or whatever, there are bound to be things that go break that are annoying; central locking systems, window regulators, external stereo amplifiers, control arms, suspension bushings, etc. If you’re prepared for the elbow grease aspects then go for it.

Personal story: we ex-patted to the EU 8 months ago and have one car, the venerable 2002 BMW 520d (E39.) I think we have 280,000km on it now. We purchased it with 270k-ish. But, I do have some squeaky windows, a rear tailgate that doesn’t always stay firmly shut, and I had re-grease the hood release latch. I had to replace the radio due to burned out pixels. But it’s still a great family hauler. Because of the low cost of ownership (€2250 purchase price, it sips diesel, and the 2L engine is still faster than a lot of the 1.x engines) we don’t care about how badly it gets dinged because we have to park on the street. I have a stack of suspension parts in my dining room that I need to install and will likely need to order scores more of bushings and tie-rod ends, etc after I get underneath the car for the first time. We will need tires by the time it’s ready for its first annual inspection in October. We’ll probably have to do a clutch and slave cylinder in the next year. And depending on funding I may get an ECU upgrade, because turbo + ECU regardless of petrol or diesel fuels.

You can always biodiesel the diesel for super cheap fuel. Outside of populated areas (truck stops) diesel is closer to parity with petrol. In the EU it’s the opposite, the tune of €.30/litre.

Our prices change like the weather. It’s usually at least over 3.00. It was around there last time I filled up our 300TD. I’ve even seen regular at nearly 3.00 when I’m going to work, but then it’s down to 2.50 on my return trip.

The I6 bi turbo diesels in the bimmers sound awesome. They’re terribly unreliable though. I had a 335d and it was fantastic, except that it require red about $10k in repairs with under 40k miles.

I would say the main advantage is that the gas engine might be more reliable and cheaper to run (the desiel fluids that they need).

Oldsmobile 350 diesel as used by all GM divisions in the 80s. Not even once.

Because the BMW is a luxury crossover SUV that just happens to have a diesel. The Defender and old Land Cruiser, much as I love them, have nothing luxury about them. They are tools.
