Rant & Backstory: I go to a small public alternative/magnet high school, pretty much 70 smart people and 5 dumb people per grade, but given that the school is only 75 per grade special class selection is limited. So I am taking an PLTW engineering class with a friend (who sometimes drives me crazy, but I digress) at one of the big public high schools. This arrangement worked before I had my license as my mom (who works part time) and his parents (who both retired) switched off giving rides back to the magnet school. Anyway I got my license in February and drove to after school stuff (as this arrangement worked and my parents needed their cars). Now come March when the snow and salt melted away, the Miata came out to play. My mom needed me to take my brother to a piano lesson right after school, and it was on her day to carpool. So she called the friend’s parents to let them know I would be driving, and his dad offered, but it obviously wouldn’t help with the task, so because I was ‘inexperienced’, he went to drive his son .9 miles. Now, because I’ve been busy and so have my parents, I’ve been driving most days. All except once, his dad came to drive him .9 miles!! It’s not like I’ve been a reckless teenager either. So someone who drives on the interstate every week, drives his brother places, and has driven in bad snowstorms and to the northwest suburbs of Chicago from SE WI, is too unsafe to trust driving his kid .9 miles.
*I am sorry for not being politically correct, the school is in an urban area, I like racial diversity, ‘ghetto’ is just the term where I’m from. I dodn’t mean to offend anyone.
Urban Dictionary definition of the town the school is in (there are about 5 students in each grade that fit this definition perfectly)

Proper noun. Racine, Wisconsin. Also: Raycilla, Raytown and the Ghetto. Racine is considered to be the armpit of Wisconsin. The only thing surpassing the amount of stupidity there is the sheer number of people who retain the trait. The nice parts of town include up to 3 blocks from the lake, where the wealthy citizens (The Johnson family) reside. Other nice areas include: Outlying villages and towns, and anywhere not Racine.
Bitch, I from Racine. Don’t make me kill you wit dis pencil.

I mean, you ARE inexperienced, and it IS a Miata.

You’d be getting your ass whooped right now if you went around calling people “ghetto people” where I went to school.

You’ll find it surprisingly hard to trust teenagers once you age out of being one.

I go to a Magnet school too (last day is tomorrow, I’m happy to get out) with a similar ratio of students (I’m a magnet student but some of the “gheto” people are my best friends). How far do you commute? I’m 25 miles away with a half hour commute in the morning and an hour long commute in the afternoon. It sucks but I’ve gotten about 32,000 miles under me in 2 years.

Yeah “ghetto people” required for demographic reasons. I wouldn't let my kid ride with a moron either.

ghetto people

pretty much 70 smart people and 5 ghetto people per grade (required for demographic reasons)
lol. I guess it’s better than “urban”...? also, a tad irrelevant.
anyway, does it actually matter? you don’t have to prove your driving abilities to anyone. even if you did, I’d rank your friend’s retired dad pretty low on that list. its his kid, gas, and time. no sweat off your back.

my dad’s been driving the Miata, I’ve been driving the CR-V, and I’m a better driver than his parents. I’ve not encountered this with anyone else. Even my parents think it’s stupid

not a moron, very safe driver, neighbor trusts me with her 11 year old in the car

Hey, I don’t know you, you might be a FANTASTIC driver.....
....but that doesn't mean you are experienced. They're right on that part.

I know some alternative schools are full of dumb asses, so I did have to clarify somewhat...
I know it doesn’t matter, but when my mom has to take him the .9 miles, it’s a day I don’t get to drive

They are, though. I had a friend who had to wake up at 4 AM to get on a bus to ride 2 hours to school every day. They just had to bus them in, because the are the high school is in is very white and they were in the nearest black neighborhood.
Plus, the term ghetto is entirely accurate. A ghetto is a part of a city occupied by minority groups. Which is the areas that they bus kids from for better integration after Brown v. Board of Education.

Do explain, “Ghetto people.”
![]() 05/21/2015 at 21:16 |

The thing is, they honestly shouldn’t be at the school

70 smart people and 5 ghetto people per grade (required for demographic reasons)
Is this at all relevant or are you just showing off how much your fancy magnet school didn’t teach you about casual racism/classism?

8 miles each way, 15-20 minutes depending on traffic and how late I leave

You should have seen me when I had my temps, went on every errand with my parents to gain experience. I realize I haven’t been driving for 30 years, but the distance is so small, I feel it’s asinine on his part

they aren’t all black, they act out, and don’t belong

You sound so incredibly condescending right now. How about this, you get sent over to their “ghetto” school?
![]() 05/21/2015 at 21:23 |

To refer to people as “ghetto people” reveals a deep seated ignorance in regards to the way an individual views people different from themselves.
![]() 05/21/2015 at 21:24 |

If that’s the case then just call them assholes. Just as accurate and you won’t get your ass kicked.

He should have phrased it “people from the ghetto”, but my point still stands. That is what they are, and there is no way around it.

I take a class at the ‘ghetto’ school, and it’s not the school, it’s the ghetto attitude.
I to apologize for sounding condescending! There are plenty of minorities at the school who are fine. The ‘ghetto’ people aren’t even all black!
![]() 05/21/2015 at 21:29 |

Nobody ever even implied that except you. But it’s not necessary to even go there in the first place, it seems irrelevant.

Ubel, this isn’t a guy who built the railroads, man...
Oh wait, no. That’s just a stupid, dogwhistle racial term to use. It’s cool, though. For demographic reasons.

A bit of friendly advice: Read up on “ white fragility .” Obviously I don’t know if you’re white, but that’s what the concept was called, and a lot of us are guilty of it but it’s not the end of the world.

So now you know how it feels to be stereotyped. It sucks! But it’s ok, you can learn from it and maybe next time not refer to all the “ghetto people” in your school as such. Trust me, I said and did a lot of stupid things as a teen.

I have to say, at my school, using the term “ghetto” refers to people who act a certain way, regardless of race. Not saying I condone it, but for me it doesn’t have a particularly racial connotation.
