That was an excellent ad, I don’t know why you didn’t like it!

It made me feel young, and I am 18!

Mazda would like to remind you that the only real you is the one where you ignore your responsibilities and pretend you are a teen again.

Dude, I love this commercial.

But I’m a dad with three kids and a CX-9 in the garage and drove a 3s hatch for 7 years and love the idea of owning a new Mazdaspeed Miata or the next MS3 or the next RX-7/8/9 some day...

yeah thats what I don’t like about it. My number one goal in life is to have a wife and family and be a good dad. Anything else in a sense doesn’t matter so much but to say that I am not my true self with those things is crazy.

Ha! I didn’t get that... I think you do find your true self at some point when you’re in college or slightly thereafter. Nothing wrong with rewarding yourself with experiences you loved and missed after many years of service to and sacrifice for your family.

And I’m sure he takes the missus for drives in the new car, too.

nope, you are only your true self when you ignore the reality of a responsible life...sorry.

I’m still searching for my “true self”, if such a thing exists, as a adult but one thing I know for sure is that its not locked up in nostalgia.

I love my wife and my kids, and my goals are very similar to yours. The fact of the matter is that your wants and needs often take a backseat to them for many years; which I’m completely okay with and thankful for the opportunity to be “Dad” and husband. But having the time after the kids have grown up to go back and enjoy some of those things that you loved in and miss from your youth - “reminding yourself of when you were you” - is not a bad thing. While my priority is to my family, there are still things in life that I want to do and see and experience on a personal basis (some with be with them along for the ride, some won’t be).

I assumed you would have found it on one of your expeditions. Hope you come across it soon (if it exists).

I’m not nostalgic for college, per se, but for times when I was nourishing my creative side more, had more freedom to travel (and go camping) and just had a generally less-scheduled life.

I guess what I’m saying is that my “true self” is always evolving. I enjoy what I’m doing right now with my expeditions and such, but im not looking for anything out there other than a little escape. Feels great, but so does any escape. What Mazda is calling “your true self” I would interpret as...maybe...a simplier time? Thing I’ve learned over the years though is that I have to be happy with the here and now. Sure, I want to improve and grow, but my true self starts over when I wake up everyday. Its a message thats obviously tricky to convey in ads because what resonates with some will not with others. I see this add as a bit of “escape is the only happiness” but I can totally see where you are coming from too and you’re not wrong.

I think you can only know yourself (truly?) if you have the time to be on your own for a while. I know myself as husband to my wife and I know myself as dad to my kids (and as an employee, and as a son, brother, etc., etc.). But it’s been a long time since it’s just been me. What did that look like again? What did that guy aspire to be and to do? Was he way off base, or did he have the right idea and did I get off-track at some point? If he knew something I’ve forgotten, how do I get back on the path to where he was headed?

Here’s the response I wrote to Frank:

I can dig what you are saying. I try not to think of it as putting my life on the backseat...this IS my life. That said, there is something healthy about getting to be with just you and your thoughts. I think we are both generally on the same page, just looking at it differently.

Well as a home owner, husdband, dad, etc...I’m not like I was when i was 20. That was when I was me all the time, now that’s progresses. I can get behind the idea of feeling like I’m just me again, if only for a bit.

And one of the joys of life is introducing the things you love and fulfill you to your spouse and kids (and hopefully grandkids one day).
