Friend took the top of the airbox off his stock intake for more induction noise. Any danger there?

On what car?

As long as the air still goes through the filter, I don’t think so. IIRC, a lot of people do this with the S2000. In fact, I’m pretty positive mine didn’t have an air box lid.

As long as it's still filtered, no.

You should be fine then.

There is a chance that it could throw an airflow code, but probably not. As you’ve said in other comments, the air is still going through the filter.

That seems very stupid. What’s holding in the air filter? Also, with the top of the airbox off it’s sucking in air from the engine compartment and not the front of the car.

That’s what I figured, just wanted to check. I pulled mine off too after these comments, haha.

yeah, its going to be warmer induction air for sure...no performance benefit and possibly a performance loss, but if its just for sound and you don’t care about the potential for loosing your filter (or have a workaround) then sure.

My professional mechanic friends frown on that sort of thing, so I’ve stayed away from it.

Is there something to hold the filter in place with the airbox top off? All of my cars use the airbox halves to hold the filter in place.

There’s a tab that sticks into the intake, you’d have to really pull on it to be able to get it out.

Is the whole rim of the air filter held in place? I would be nervous of the filter bouncing around if the whole perimeter isn’t clamped. It wouldn’t take much junk sneaking around the filter to really score up your cylinder walls.

It basically becomes a hot air intake, so it will probably make a bit less power.

We’ll see if I notice it.
