That was a nice tribute, and I think Conan “get’s it.” However, my biggest complaint about Conan is that he always makes the show about him, and not his guest, and the one clip he showed from the Letterman interview was about his joke and not Dave’s. I don’t know if he had much control over it, what with licensing and all. But he was on camera more than Dave, as if we were supposed to say, “Look how funny Conan looked back then!”

The thing about Dave is that he was truly a student of the genre. He learned from the greats like Jack Parr and Johnny Carson, and I don’t think he honestly ever felt like he could eclipse them. And when he interviewed people, he listened. As much as I like Jon Stewart, and as smart as he is, it seems like he’s always trying to find a spot to crack a joke and pull the attention away from the guest. Fallon is young and hip, but I think he suffers the same problem, but I also think he’s on the right track and will learn. Leno was always just terrible, a comic who never trusted his material.

Letterman was much like Carson in that he always trusted his material, and when it bombed, it bombed. But he still got a laugh. I will miss him.
