In celebration of today have a Holden 48/215, introduced in 1948 and having a 2.15 litre engine.

This was the first car sold under the Holden name and was an Australian compromise between British and American cars. The body was originally designed as a Chevrolet but then GM decided that it was too small for the home market but would probably do the Australians. The six cylinder engine was similarly a compromise between the fours used in British cars and American V8s. Three gears transmitted the power to the rear wheels, but the engine was so flexible that once moving you really only needed third.

Every effort was made to spare expense and so the Holden came with no indicators, one brake light, one sun visor and no heating (because Australia) and no demisting (because Australia, the only moisture there is in beer)

Australians snapped them up as being Australian cars, made in Australia for Australians.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Little known fact:

The rear seat of the Holden was made of a material which in time supported its own ecosystem and one could find up to 17 species of insect, four spiders, two scorpions and a small snake. All of these were lethal to humans, because Australia.

now those 48/215’s are worth big money.

interestingly the first couple of prototypes of those were built in 1946 in the USA then shipped here.

Indeed, one of the prototypes was offered for something more than A$1m.

I love the way it keeps thing simple. It doesn’t have much equipment or unnecessary lights. The rear part has one single light in the trunk lid. Hard to say if it even contains brake light or not. Probably no front parking lights either.

Just one central brake light and apparently no sidelights.

You had to pay more to get a passenger sun visor.

I wonder if it has any heater or just cold air blower.

My friend’s ‘78 Opel Kadett also lacked passenger’s visor.

No heating or ventilation. Too hot? Open the windows.

It seems that I was fooled by that grill type thing in the dashboard.
